For track, yes. For street, no. Suspension is really too brutal for most. Even my GTS with sport suspension is pretty tough.

I sold my E90 M3 in late 2013 and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't want to be back in an S65. I told myself then that it doesn't fit my life and currently I'm in an M235i xDrive and while I like the car a lot, it has very little emotion to it. I'll be in this car for a while but when the lease is up, I'll be considering a true M again and the E9x M3 vs M2 is a likely decision I'll face.

Why can't we just have an S65 in whatever BMW we want?

So I think the biggest disappointment with the M2 thus far has been weight. I'm pretty bummed that it is roughly the same weight as an M4 (and only a small bit lighter than an E92M). So its just a slightly smaller M4... but will basically have the same driving dynamics? M2 should be lower power but more lively. I guess I reserve judgement until we see more reviews and/or get to drive it myself.

I actually see the bright side of this, it's similar to the M4 yet much cheaper
And it looks different so you get more choices.

Except it has less power, likely cheaper materials, and is more crowded for passengers. IMHO it would have to be a fairly substantial savings from an M4 to make it worth while.

I actually wish they focused more on weight, even if at the expense of a bit of power. If they focused all the costs on getting the chassis weight down and then used an upgraded 4-cylinder I think it would have been pretty cool. 330-340hp 4-cylinder and sub 3200 pounds would have made it really feel like it deserved the name "M2".

I honestly think the M2 coupe is going to be a better car than the M3/M4.

-Handling will be better
-Sounds better to me based on videos
-10k or so cheaper than M3 F80.

BUT From a E92 M3 standpoint the S65 all day.
S65 is a masterpiece besides the fact the bearing suck = (

forget the m2, I didn't even get the same "soul" feeling out of the s55 in my f80. I ended up selling that f80 and grabbing a 2013 m3 and am now again happy! (had a 2012 for 3 years before the f80)

Problem is the current 2-series is really chunky -- it's pretty much one of the worst BMW platforms they've ever built in terms of weight vs size, particularly as compared to something like VW's MQB. I think the M235 is something like 3600 lbs, so even losing weight, the M2 is hard pressed to be much less than the M4. I have a dual clutch AWD Golf R with fairly similar interior dimension to a M235xi, and it's 350 lbs lighter.

BMW is finally catching up, the M4 is a little better than the old M3 coupe. I think the next gen of 2/3/4 series is going to be the one to have, and this gen might be worth just waiting out if you can. I feel like this gen, they were so determined to out MB MB that they forgot to be BMW, that brand that historically had always been the lightest best handling in class. The brand new 7 is finally back to this standard, substantially lighter than equivalent S series and so far getting raves for handling.

IMS issues were more rare than rod bearing issues the M3 has been plagued with for the last 2 generations. Their reliability and quality are second to none. I guess you wouldn't know always pointing out exceptions without first hand experience.

My father and I have put close to 100K miles on several 911's (and even more with my extended family) and never had one issue. Same can't be said of the many BMW's our family has had.

As near as I can tell, the E9x M3 rod bearing issue has a failure rate incidence of 1.0-1.4%. It seems to happen more frequently (or at least reported on the M3 forums) on the later cars (2011-2013).

As a 2009 E92 M3 owner (now 22,000 miles) I've weighed the risk 1.5% on the outside of grenading a $20,000 engine against the expense $2000-$2500) of replacing the rod bearings. Thus far the risk doesn't justify the expense. Have you determined the incidence to be higher?

The good news is that you still can. I think they're going to make a lot of these M2s. All is not lost, look at the stats below (incomplete list as this is the data available at this time). The E92 M3 is something, in my mind, truly special. My personal observed mileage is 15.1, the one let down:

I have a manual e92 that's supercharged. While it's fun. A dct is way faster especially with a supercharged car. But all good. It's still fun. Especially at the track. I'm working on my heel towing. My old 370z would rev match down shift for you like the m2. Makes things easier but learning heel toe is good also.

If i had to chose between used e9x m3 and brand new m2, i would go for m2 for sure.

Just managed to see a new M2 parked side-by-side with my E92 M3, so thought I'd chime in here.

Let's get the obvious out of the way. Handling wise, I have no doubt the M2 will blow the E92 out of the water. It's a newer platform with the latest bells and whistles. Interior design wise, the M2 is also better. The E92 interior was already dated when the car was released. So that's out of the way.

However, parked side by side, I was unable to definitively say that the M2 looked better than the E92. It's a handsome car, don't get me wrong. It's got flares and bulges and it looked really muscular. However, it also looked a bit too bulky and tall, and the design was just a bit too busy. Mind you, this is subjective. I found my M3 appearing lower (maybe cos it was wider?) and sleeker. The M2 looks like a body builder in a track suit. The E92 looks like a man in a fine suit.

Then there's the engine. Outright performance may go to the M2. And being a turbo, the M2 will be much easier and cheaper to tune for more power. But the M2 sounds nowhere like the glorious S65 V8 in the E92 M3. In fact, I think BMW has made the worst sounding engines of this generation of turbo petrols and the M2 is in that list. The M2 also delivers fat gobs of torque every where, but the S65 will be the more characterful to drive.

Gearbox wise, it's really a personal preference. I've driven performance manual cars most of my life and have a DCT M3 now. Tbh, I do miss being able to do a heel-and-toe, but the DCT is the better gearbox for the high revving nature of the S65. It's terribly competent and really enjoyable to use. So much so that I seldom find myself missing a stick shift any more these days.

So yeah it all depends. The younger me would go for the M2 for sure. Power and handling was everything to me back then. But if I were to make the choice today, I'd pick the E92 M3. Yes it'd be an older car, requiring more maintenance, but it just has the air of an older statesman about it. A certain class that you know you may not be able to find again in the newer, younger, M2.

The 2 will not have a screaming engine, leather is a step down, limited color choices, higher depreciation. But it will have a warranty and should be a solid driver. Seems like the e92 was a more expensive build.

I am holding out for news on the 2, but a laguna sec blue with comp pkg is really compelling.

I own a E92 and E90 M3 and test drove a M2 on track. I cannot fathom why one would prefer one over the E92.

It has worse steering, much worse sound, weighs almost the same, no CF roof or cool mirrors and power to weight is the same as the E92

The rear seats of the M2 are appropriate for a 2+2, forget putting 4 adults in the car like in an E9X
