Actually the 2 cars will be compared and cross-shopped a lot. I owned a 135i and a 335i at the same time and the 1 series was so much more fun to drive. It's too early to compare them yet, but I have a feeling the driving dynamics of the 1M coupe may be more enjoyable (than the M3) as well. I have absolutely no regrets with the M3, but if the 1M coupe was out right now, it probably would have been a very tough choice. I love the size of the 1 series and think the 3 series is too big. But the S65 engine is what sold me on this car and knowing that this may be the last NA M car, I don't regret my decision one bit.

If you live in a small city and do more city driving you will find the new 1M more fun but if you do a lot of highway driving then the M3 gets the medal. Depends on where you live and where you drive most of the time.

i wouldn't cross shop the 1m with the current m3 due to the zero similarity between the engine.
but i would definitely cross shop between the 1m and the new m3 turbo. |

Long-term readers have no doubt noticed my persistent bitching about M3s gaining size and weight over the years, making them less wieldy than I think they ought to be.
Therefore, I'm thinking hopeful thoughts about this baby M. There is the possibility that if they make the sunroof an option, the overall weight may stay under 3400 pounds. Combine that with the shorter wheelbase and this could be the M of choice for handling and tossability fiends. Hope they don't screw it up. Bruce |

I would totally buy a completely stripped 1m, I really like how the 1 series looks and it would be a fun track car

One of the lucky participants who won a trip to Germany for a test drive was told the car will be no more than 1500 kg, which I believe places it between the e36 and e46 M3 in terms of mass. Power output of 340 hp will keep power to weight ratio below current M3 and close to e86 Z4M coupe, although it appears to have an overboost mode similar to the 335is. It remains to be seen whether the N54 power plant uses the same turbos - a few sources indicate upgraded snails with test drivers reporting better power delivery at high revs as compared to standard N54 engine. Car will be revealed in full in 10 days, and hopefully full engine specs will be made available at that time.

More weight comes from bigger wheels (in some cases), brakes, muffler and perhaps transmission enhancements (LSD, M3 tranny) - would you say about 50-75lbs or so? Neutral: Engine compartment looks all but the same. Bumpers are unknown. Interior probably the same. Savings: A few lbs are shaved from the aluminum suspension components. I'm guessing sunroof will not be standard (that's a 40lbs saving). I give it the same as a 135i, or under 3400lbs.
