Agreed. Power button works just fine on my M3, and I only have 600 miles on the odometer.

BMW salesman are notorious for this kind of BS. The E46 M3 was not restricted to the customer even before break-in. It was however limited to something like 3000 rpm until it got to the dealer. This is so that the guys driving it off the boat didn't try to race with it. I seriously doubt this has changed with the E9x. The M5 and I believe M6, have a sport button that de-restricts the engine when it is on. With it off the throttle bodies only open up to 90% allowing only about 400 hp. With it on they open up fully allowing all 500+ hp.

BTW, there is some controversy about break-in. Some say drive it gently, other say drive it like you stole it. With my E46 M3 I followed BMW's guidelines, i.e. under 5500 rpm and 105 mph, but I still pushed it hard and drove over a varying number of speeds, not using the cruise control except to make sure that it worked. I had no problems with the engine (except I had to bring it in for the bearing recall) and it seemed to just get stronger and stronger as the miles were piled on.

I have never heard anything definitive about BMW (and M in particular) but I just talked to a Corvette fanatic friend of mine. Fanatical enough that he arranged to "be there" as his car rolled off the production line. He managed to ride in his own car as a tech dynoed it (all Vettes go through it). The procedure takes roughly 2 minutes and entails taking the car to 75MPH and running some 400-ish tests.

Official break-in requirements:
1. Vary engine RPMs
2. 55MPH max for first 500 miles
3. Yada yada yada

So even though the car has reached 75MPH in its first mile of life, the official break-in policy is not to exceed 55MPH for the next 500 miles! There must be an intelligent reason for these break-in requirements

Go and drive in some nice tight twisties somewhere, you hardly need more than 5.5k rpm and the on/off throttle, up/down RPMs and shifting between 2-3-4 with the odd 5 and 6 will suffice for a good run-in.
