Remember folks, this forum is a VERY smal sliver of M3 population and no one comes onto a forum stating, "hey my car runs great!", it's always only the negative things. That being said, I still don't think this warrants any kind of concern ala S54 and e46 m3 bearing issues.

And yes, I do believe a SC sped up or was def a contributing factor to a failure. Anyone who says otherwise is straight foolish. You're creating much greated cylinder pressures in positive displacement. this car was never intended being a High compression motor for boost.

New bearings? You mean they now include VAC coated bearings with the kits?

On ESS site for the 650 it just says it includes "-High performance S65 rod bearings."

In a perverse way, if BMW actually believed the rod bearings were an issue/defect (and they would not disclose this to the public if in their mind the issue is in 'insuffient numbers') you may be surprised on what may actually get covered if escalated beyond the dealership level. Even the threat of discovery of an issue where there is sufficient evidence could be used as ammunition by other parties not runing S/C's and having issues with stock engines beyond the warranty period. With large corporations is much more than the corporation vs "one guy who put on a supercharger" individual battle. If they're smart about this stuff, they would take this bigger picture into account in their decision making.
From a bigger picture perspective they probably don't want to routinely cover blown engines to heavily modded cars since that will encourage more people to do things like put SC on them and push the limits of what the engine is designed to handle and soon having blown engines will become much more comman regardless of whether there is a design flaw with them at all.

Is there a design flaw? Maybe, but to actually have proof legally of that probably requires showing that many non-modified cars have had failures and it doesn't seem that is the case so far, or paying huge fees to an appropriately qualified experts with engineering backgrounds to perform the research and testify to this, which for one individual, wouldn't be anywhere near cost effective since that would cost way more than a new engine.

Point taken. I'm assuming these rod bearing threads/registries involve mostly blown engines. Will be very interesting to see if OP gets covered or not in this situation.

Looks like we got two more cases to be added on the registry.
That's a scary thread. I gotta listen more carefully. I've yet to encounter any kind of clicking sound, but who the heck knows. With the E9X's production coming to an end, what happens if you need a whole new engine? Do they have a stock of fresh engines sitting in their warehouse just in case someone with warranty blows their engine?

Nah, when production ends they just take the spare motors in inventory and melt them down. No need to keep any around.

Yeah, I'm sure they keep a few around, but how many? I'm sure they got an algorithm or a formula to keep a certain number based on how many they've sold. I'm not in the car making business, so I don't know. Maybe someone with better understanding could enlighten me and the forum.

Totally agree with you Jason.. This is some scary stuff but Iam sure regardless of when the E9X is totally phased out of production BMW will always have some S65's laying around for the late model M's still in warranty or for those unfortunate ones that are out but need to new motor.

yeah, i hope i'm not one of those who'd ever need a new motor. it seems like the problem is not isolated to people who SC their cars.

you're right. i'm sure they gotta have enough to cover people through regular warranty AND people who purchased extended warranty. just curious how they determine how many to keep around or do they make them out of spare parts as needed. that is all. jesus. this forum is tough, no need to get sarcastic. i'm gonna think hard about getting the extended warranty IF I feel I'm gonna keep the car much longer than 4 years. I'm always thinking I will but with the new model coming out, who knows???

As for the OP, it really sucks that you're going through all the trouble. I'm no stranger to being stranded. Hope you can resolve quickly and move forward.

I believe that there are gov't regulations stating how long a car company is required to keep making parts for a certain model. 10 yrs.? Also don't forget about rebuilt motors. There is usually a good supply of perfectly good blocks and heads available as time goes by. All engine don't explode, some just wear out and get rebuilt.
