did you guys notice this pattern?
e30 m3s are coupe only model and that was followed by the e36 m3 which had both coupe and sedan and then the e46 coupe only m3. of those three generations, i think majority of people here would agree that the coupe only generations of e30 and e46 get most attention and the e36 is kind of like a forgotten generation. my point is, do you guys think this pattern will follow the e90,e92 m3? will this generation become the afterthought like the e36 once the next coupe only generation m3 comes out?

I don't think its the case of the E36 being a forgotten generation. The E30 is a classic of historical significance and will always be revered and the E46 happen to be the outgoing model still fresh in everyone's mind.
I believe a lot of E36 M3s are used in track outings all over. But you did make an interesting observation...

Furthermore, I think the pattern you notice is arbitrary. IMHO, E36 is not forgotten at all. If it gets less mention, its just because its old. The E30 is obviously older still, but that was the first M3 so it will naturally hold a certain level of popularity because of this. |

i think what he meant was that E36 M3 *sedans* are forgotten, not E36 M3 in general. in which case, i'd loosely agree because it's the coupe that usually gets on the track, rather than the sedan.
with M3 sedan, though, BMW almost goes back to the original intent of the 3-series, and that is, to create an affordable, useful, practical yet agile and powerful sports sedan. perfect to have the best of both worlds for young dads that aren't yet ready to completely give up their "old" lives.

BMW has made a mistakes not selling E46 M3 sedan. There were many theories floating on the web, some suggest E46 sedan platform doesn't look good with wide rear fender, some suggest E46 M3 sedan will directly impact the sales of M5, and it goes on and on. It's an interesting observation as you point out, only until next generation (Fxx) M3 model offer in "coupe only" for us to conclude BMW releases coupe/sedan every other generation. Rest assured all M models were the best in their era, nothing have been forgotten.

The E36 M3 is the most sold, most tracked, and most tuned of all the M3's. Bimmerforums.com and dtmpower.net all were basically dedicated to the E36 M3.

i actually liked the 4 door e36 M3. surprisingly good looking, despite the fact that 4 doors usually lose a lot of aesthetic appeal.

Interesting observation! But like stated above, the E30 was the first M3 so it had a lot of historical value, and E46 M3 was when people were boomed with money thats why it is popular also. I am sure the E92 will carry on the E46 popularity and will not be forgotten.

i think the four door looks just as good as coupe if not better in some respects i think it looks more aggresive and bulkier, but i hate those F*** lights, the coupe lights are HOT (REAR lights), oh and it best have CF! |

i agree about the grill, does not suit the aggresive lines, sunroof in midlands of uk has no real use to be honest weather here is generally gloomy and grey, and i really like the effect of the carbon roof against the body colour, but i respect a sunroof when you can enjoy it nearly all the time, i have 1 on my current m3 and its nice to have but i only get too enjoy rarely, whereas a CF enjoy everytime i see it and drive it!! actually seeing the new picture of the sedan the lights have a aggresive frown look accentuated by the rear fenders! i think they would grow on me!! but not having choice of CF has hit me hard ! but lets not forget when you behind the wheel the engine and drive will help you forget all that
