Question: To Keyhole Cover or Not?
I bought a keyhole cover for my 2011 E92, but since there is no manual trunk lock (that I can find), there would be no way to get in my car if the battery died.
Am I missing something? |

There is no keyhole on the trunk for the 2010's. Get the keyhole cover if you want, you can always call bmw for remote unlock.

The downside to the keyhole covers is obviously losing the ability to open the car if the battery dies. I personally prefer the cleaner look and am willing to accept the risk but it's something to consider before going into it. With that said, it's pretty rare for the battery to die and if you are conscious about it, you shouldn't run into the problem.

You can always replace the plastic piece inside the key cover with the lock. That way if the battery ever dies you can just break the key hole cover and the lock will be there.

I like this mod also but decided against it. God for bid you need to open the car with the key in a emergency....YOU CANT. Not worth it. Just buy it for shows and tape it over the keyhole cover if it really bothers you.

if one did have the key hole delete installed and the battery did go dead, how would we unlock the car? what would the aaa or bmw tech do?
also for those with no key hole on their trunk and replacing to an aftermarket one like arkym, vors, or challange, i wonder if we can buy the key hole and retrofit as the wires should be the same no?

ya, i'm not going to lie. What are the chances your battery is going to die on you? How many times have you had your battery die on you and you needed to manually unlock the car with the key?
I HAVE had the battery die on me on my e46 M3 but it was my own fault for not replacing it, i kind of knew it needed replacing. But i left it over the weekend at my girlfriend's house and when i went to start it, no dice. So that was preventable if i would have just replaced it instead of playing the guessing game. So i did have to manually unlock it. But with that said, i have bought the key hole cover for the e92 and will be putting it on. As long as you don't wait to the last minute to replace your battery when you know it's going out on you, you shouldn't have a problem.

I chose not to but the keyhole cover just because $hit happens and I hate to get caught out because of a cover.

Watches, jewelry, belts and even the small copper rivets on jean pockets are a big NO when working on vehicles.
