Yellowing carbon fiber on roof

Does the carbon fiber roof on the m3 eventually yellow as a result of exposure to sunlight? I've read this is a pretty common problem with exposed carbon fiber on other cars.

It's supposed to be UV protected. Who really knows though, they're not old enough.

Have we seen this happen to the M6's yet? I think if they haven't had any issues, neither should we.

Shit, I never even knew they had a CF roof! I was thinking you'd have to find a CSL in Europe to get a good idea.

I see a high volume of these cars come through our dealership and I've yet to notice any issues with M3's or M6's...so thats a good sign but we'll see how they look after 10+ years

If it does yellow, your warranty will have expired for sometime already.

I saw a CSL (it had the CF roof and the CSL interior - pretty sure it was a real one) at the Dinan open house. I don't recall that the roof was yellowed (but didn't look real close).

you wont have a problem with it getting yellow as long as you polish it when you notice any oxidation, and keep it waxed regularly.

Wasn't trying to show yellowing or not, just validating that I saw a CSL (or a very good clone). You're in the SF Bay Area? You could have gone to the Dinan open house and seen it yourself. I drove up from the south San Joaquin Valley (Visalia) to be there myself. I posted several pictures of the day here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=436260 .

That car belongs to a friend of mine. It is a full CSL conversion with pretty much every dinan parts on it.

Mine's an 08 and I believe it's been outside most of it's life (no garage). No yellowing yet.

Thanks. It is a nice car. I thought it might be the real deal as it has all the interior pieces as best I could tell. He must have a ton of money in it.

Waxing will prolong the clear coat but no amount of wax will prevent the discoloration and peeling. It depends on the quality of the UV protectant/clear coat and how often is the car parked outside during the strongest part of the sun-shining days.

My old Evo had a CF spoiler. The clear coat started peeling after 4 years. I parked it outside everyday under no cover. Once the clear coat peels, your CF will discolor.

My suggestion is if the car is parked outside, you should put a cover on it.

The silver lining is this: if it does start to peel, you can sand off the clear coat and reapply it again and it'll be good as new for another 4+ years.
The problem is this isn't a spoiler where you can take it off and do it over a weekend in your garage, you need to have it professionally done. It costs about $250 to do a spoiler, for a roof, my guess is it'll cost close to $900.

IMHO a good coat of wax/sealant regularly applied would prevent clear coat failure on CF parts as it does on regular paint. I don't see why there would be a difference.

^The CF piece on my old car was def. not designed to be exposed to sunlight for 365 days a year for 4 years. I waxed it religiously. What wax/sealent did you have in mind?

Who knows, maybe BMW uses better clear coat/UV protectant? After going through what I did with my spoiler, it would be a lot easier to park the car indoors or at least put a cover on during the day given the large surface area for a CF roof on the E92.

In retrospect, I should have just used an old sheet or towel and cover my spoiler while it was parked outside whenever the car is parked for a long time like when I'm at work, it takes like 2 secs to take it off.

I pretty much just use Optimum Car wax and blackfire now. I think carbon fiber yellowing has a lot to do with the clearcoat. Many carrera gts have yellowing on their cf parts. But clearcoat failure leading to pealing in 4 years is pretty fast, was it a factory spoiler of aftermarket?
