You can open it by undoing the 5 tq bolts. The plate comes off...be sure to post the pics of your gears.

Engine malfunction! Reduced power
Increased emissions!
DBC malfunction! Drive carefully
Start-off assistance inactive!
DSC malfunction! Drive carefully

The car went into limp home mode and wouldn't rev over 3k or so with very little power. She pulled over, restarted, check engine light remained along with increased emissions but it ran fine. I took it out to replicate and sure enough same thing happened to me. The car was fully warmed up and when I aggressively pulled out onto the highway, I had the same error message and loss of power. I used my cheapo obd reader and it showed code P0638. I reset the SEL and brought it home.

I have been reading up on various errors on here for a while now and I'm still very unsure. I first focused on the DSC malfunction because that is what my wife mentioned on the phone. Even after the warnings popped up, the turn signals turned off appropriately, so I don't think the steering angle sensor is bad. My next thought was wheel bearing as I have noticed a ticking coming from the front left wheel.

But would a wheel bearing/speed sensor problem also cause an engine malfunction/limp home mode? Would the BT tool show a bearing code or speed sensor code? (Not that I have access to one).

Perhaps the rough idle SIB problem but would that trigger the DSC warnings? Any help would be appreciated.

I paid about 2,500 + tax to get both TVA's and the ICV replaced w/ labor and 2 year BMW warranty. I called BMW NA and was able to get the dealership to get me a 15% discount.

DSC malfunction

Took mine into BMW today for all the reasons previously cited in this thread..... I love the term "limp" mode....

SA said might be battery/voltage issue and I reminded him that he replaced the batter just 4 months ago for this reason.... Now I'm reading about the TVA being the culprit....

Maybe I should forward this post to him! I'll let you know what they say when they call.

Dont be scared! Its just a car and even if you're not mechanically inclined you can save alot of money by just DIY!
Check out our DIY section.
As for the TBA's many end up replacing the whole unit, as it could be a waste to crack open the unit, replace a plastic gear re-install everything only to find out the TBA-motor failed or the complete electric board got shot.
Best bet, without to step on anyones feet, is to replace the TBA's with a brand new unit.
Again, nothing to be afraid of, hope I could help!
Whats also possible, is to prepare yourself with an datalog diagnostic tool!
You can really follow up on dataloggs the health status of your TBA's along with a billion other things. Coolest part on all that, you do it with an tiny little OBD WIFI dongle and your smart phone.
Many of us use it on here, its called Carly ( former BMWhat ), for more info check the funny vid in my sig.
Enough information,
now go out, take a deep breath and freaking enjoy your bavarian beast!

This is definitely way overpriced. I called BMW NA and they negotiated a 15% discount with my dealer which pretty much covered the labor cost.

I paid about $2,800 to replace BOTH TVA's (Bank 1 & 2) and the ICA.

Acutator abd front wheel sensor?

I got all of the above as well. Only, I was quoted $3200 with tax to fix only one actuator and one front wheel sensor since the DSC error came up. Sounds pretty high. Mine is an 09 with 44k miles.

I'm getting this same issue. Happens 10 minutes after a cold start as soon as the oil is up to temp. That's when I start driving more enthusiastically then I get this error and reduced power. After I pull over and restart the car it's fine.

I tried running a scan with my generic scanner at home but no error codes pop up. Could turning the car on and off clear the codes I need to be able to diagnose what's going on?

I've got about 89,000 miles on the car now.

So I purchased Carly and the pro app to get the codes since my generic scanner just tells me obd readiness.

Here are screen shots of the codes... do any of these suggest the throttle body actuators? Or maybe a wheel sensor was acting up after a track day since my tires where full of extra tire rubber that it picked up from the track?

I'm not getting any throttle body P codes unless I'm looking in the wrong section of the carly app

So anyone have any idea if I'm getting a throttle body error? Or could this be something else like vibration from my tires from excess track rubber picked up on my tread? Cause this hasn't happened since last week (2 days after a track day) and no further codes have popped up.

I had all those error messages. When i turned it off, let it sit, it was ok. This went on for a few weeks. I got a low battery message. I replaced the battery under warranty.

It turned out to be the alternator. Replaced the alternator and I never had the problem again. Low voltage will make your car send all kinds of error messages.

Happened again... this time I had Carly plugged in before I reset the car. So I'm thinking it's throttle body actuators time...

ugh just spent $2k on a new steering rack for our other car cause the H&R sway bar was bashing into the steering rack... gonna be an expensive automotive month!!!

When you called BMW NA for the discount was your M recently off warranty?

Just had this issue and got a quote of about $3700 Parts & Labor from my indy shop to replace both throttle actuators and idle control valve.

My08 M3 is a few years out of that emissions warranty and at 78k miles.

Debating if I should just have this done at my local BMW Stealership instead of my indy shop which has recently begun to increase their labor costs. Almost on par with the surrounding BMW Stealerships.
