State troopers using more and more Laser Guns
Over the last one or two months, I have seen more and more State troopers using radar guns here in NJ. They even park on the shoulders, have their door open to be able to shoot at oncoming traffic!
Have you the same experience in your area? In any case, it seems that radar detectors alone are less and less helpful and jammer are becoming a must (I must admit that between the hassle of installing them and the fact that I am not yet 200% convinced they really work, I have not pulled the trigger yet!).

I've been lucky that I haven't encountered any cops in the area using laser yet. All pretty much Ka band and the occasional local cop using X band still. Gotta watch out for instant-on radar also.

Why did my post get moved here from the general section?!?!?!
The question is not just intended for NJ but also for the rest of the continental states!

here in quebec, most city police use laser but the highway petrol (or state troopers as you guys call it) still use a lot of radar. so i've not given up on my radar detector yet. but i do agree that eventually radar detectors will be history once more and more departments get the cash to splurge on those shiny new laser guns.
i'd love to get a laser interceptor set up on my car. i was shopping around for an escort 9500ci a few months ago but the install is quite involved and the cost is a little prohibitive for now. i am hoping that soon enough there'll be more laser jammers on the market and it'll bring down the overall cost of a good set up.

They've been doing it by rt. 17 north and south. Especially by the sound barriers/walls by Hohokus/Waldwick and Saddle River. I always bring it down a notch every time I go there.

Basic laser/radar coverage:
1. Laser jammer mounted on bumper/behind grill (down low). 2. Laser/radar detector mounted up high on windshield near RVM. The jammer mounted low will probably not give you advance warning but will jam the laser gun with varying amounts of effectiveness when your car is targeted. The detector up high can pick up laser reflection/scatter from targeted vehicles ahead giving you advance warning but will probably not alert when your license plate or headlights are the target. You need a good laser detector though. Even more protection for the hardcore: 3. Laser VEIL painted over headlights and other IR reflective surfaces. 4. Laser shield over license plate. 5. CB radio. 6. Scanner.

The only advantage that Laser gives to the public is that it can't be used while the police car is in motion. So the cops have to be stationary and thus dedicated to speed control. This makes the use of laser not as convenient for the cops to use as when they are checking speeds of on coming traffic while they just drive down the highway.

If you're curious about radar dectectors and laser jammers I recommend this website. It has more info than you really wanted to know.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I have noticed more and more Calif. Hwy Patrol officers using Laser. If the officer is using Laser, you'll be lucky if your V1 detects it before you get targeted. My V1 has yet to go off when I see an officer using laser (I'm assuming they are since they are standing outside the car). And yes, I have the V1 properly mounted right next to my rear view mirror. I'm at a point now where I simply don't drive that fast on the freeways because I know a lot of laser speed guns are out there. Frankly, if I didn't already have a V1, I probably would not get it or any radar/laser detector now because its effectiveness is now limited where I live.

You also need to develop some strategies like always looking as far ahead down the road as you can, using a rabbit, etc. Besides the Guys of Lidar you can also check out http://www.radardetector.net for some good information.

An excellent technique.
BTW, I've had very few laser encounters. But two of the times I did have warning. Once was near Detroit, MI and it was misty/foggy, so the water vaper in the air defracted the laser beam and my V1 gave me warning before I was being targeted. The second time was in KY, I crested a hill a got a warning. I was right beside a semi and the cop was still 1/4 of a mile down the road. I don't think he got a lock on either due to the truck/the distance/or my lack of front license plate (or a combo of those). I was doing 85 plus in a 65 so I don't think he just decided to let me off.

I get less laser encounters than I used to. A few years ago I would see cops doing traffic with laser or radar three to fives times a day on my commute. Now it seems they pace vehicles mostly since I don't see them using laser/radar but do see them with cars pulled over, also three to fives times a day. I cannot take off the front plate or even cover it with a clear cover. That's illegal here in Maryland. For those subscribing to the adage of "if the detector goes off you're already caught", I can assure you that that is not the case all of the time. A laser detector, especially a good one like the V1, does work some of the time. Nothing is 100%, but one warning alone could pay for the cost of the detector.

My V1 goes off all the time on laser when those damn Infinity SUV's drive by. A few other cars as well set it off, but then never set off my Laser Interceptor. I've yet to come across a cop and have to jam his laser. Front license plate off will not save you, they aim at your headlights also. I don't have a front license plate and have tested out jammers with my car and it was easy to get a reading off most parts of the car when not using the jammer, or when I was too close for that particular jammer to work.

According to the guys of lidar the front license plate makes a significant difference. See the link I posted above. They did tests on the same vehicle with and without a license.

I believe it makes a difference. But they will still get you whether you have one installed or not.

Here are some very helpful sites and info to help counter laser guns
On my M3 I have the Laser Interceptor installed and I have a V1 so far my M3 has been shot at by laser 3 times. 1 time before the laser jammer and 2 times after the laser Jammer and my laser jammer did go off. Out of the 3 times my V1 has picked it up. I also have a laser sheild installed on my front and back License plates. My wife car has been shot by laser 10 times and 3 of those 10 times on purpose. My wife car has the Bel STi driver radar detector (In the state of Virginia the police use RDD) RDD is a Radar Detector Detector. The Virginia State police RDD can not pick up the Bel STi driver radar detector one of the very few radar detectors that can do this. The RDD will pick up the V1 along with other detectors well anyway my wife car has the Blinder M25 laser jammer, front and rear license plate laser sheild and laser Veal on the headlights.
This is a True short story that happened with me driving my wife car. The laser jammer really works, 1 of the 3 on purpose laser gun incounters on my wife car, happen when I was on my lunch break driving on a military base. (I am in the military by the way still deployed in Iraq) The military police had a speed trap set up using a Pro Laser III laser gun and I wanted to see if the Blinder M25 really worked. I drove through the speed trap the military police man was sitting in his car with the window rolled down the next thing you know my Bel STi driver went off "LASER ALERT" "LASER ALERT" at the same time my Blinder M25 went off "BEEEEEEEEP" (when this happen you are suppose to slow down turn the laser jammer off and let the police get a reading or you will JAM their gun ) well in this case I let the laser jammer stay on drove on by. You should have seen the look on the Military police officer face WTF it was priceless he was checking to see why his gun did not work and what happen. But I know what happen I Jammed his laser gun Here are the sites below to help you and anyone else out on dealing with laser guns and radar Oh and by the way I always keep a rabbit in front of me when ever I drive because in the state of Texas the state troopers like to use Instant on radar and the only best way I know to counter is always keep a rabbit in front. http://www.laserveil.com/laser/detectors/performance/ http://www.laser-interceptorusa.com/index2.html http://www.1stradardetectors.com/ http://veilguy.blogspot.com/2009/05/...treme-new.html http://veilguy.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
