Do you drive M3 to work (office) everyday?
I got a new job offer recently. However, my friend told me that I better not to drive M3 to work (office) because it will attract everyone's attention. Maybe it is not good for me.
Just curious that how many of you drive M3 to work (office) everyday? If not, will you let your boss or colleague know that you have M3? |

I feel your pain. I drive my M3 everyday to work. I am in a position and industry that frowns upon it. "If you drive an M3 then we must be paying you too much" mentality.
I didn't care. I am 44 and have worked my a$$ off to afford one. I tried to be casual and not even mention it. When first asked I just told everyone "yeah I got a new car". "It's just a 3 series". Then a few car folks knew what it was so I took a ton of grief for the first week or so. They are over it now and life moves on. I absolutely feel your pain but the pain will go away.

Drive the car to work (office) every day. I can't see driving a beater, when I know I could be driving this! Everyone at work knows I'm a car nut, so I don't get any grief about spending money on a nice BMW.

What's the difference btw nice car, expensive suits, expensive houses, luxury boxes to sporting events, or luxury vacations? As a manager, if my employees earned it, they deserve it.
I get the optics issue though. Say you work for a giant non-profit, can you drive a Ferrari to work? |

That's a horrible culture, depending on if your industry is profits driven. Personally, I want to be in a work culture of work hard, play hard. sounds like your culture is paying employees as little as possible, regardless of company profits. If times are lean, everyone shares the pain, but if times are good, everyone should be rewarded.

yeah drove it to work every day when it was brand new templates and everything...
before that i was driving a z06 in between that an out of state tagged 330ci and have a street bike. i made more than everyone on my assignment because of my education and previous work experience, I also work saturdays at my friends shop for extra cash.. so yeah 6k dollar breitling (i know in teh luxury watch game that is cheap but i love my breitling), expensive cars, judge me if u want i worked my ass off for 5 years thru college and grad school and work very hard at my jobs while everyone else was getting drunk in college and coming home from the city. i was on the ferry at 4am on my way to work, when everyone else was going out partying at night i was writing thesis and papers and shit. theres always haters ... same thing when i work at my friends shop and customers ask how i can afford that car and i explain well this is my second "fill in" type of job if that makes sense. |

We are a small clique of car enthusiasts that would rather spend the money to enjoy getting from A to B, few understand this and view sports cars as a luxury or status symbol. At 30 years old and working as an engineer at a construction equipment company in a small town, I took a ton of grief for buying mine used, even though I spent as much as my peers did on their loaded pickup trucks. It wasn't viewed the same because you "need" a pickup truck. Different priorities and views.
Now I'm consulting in the auto industry and I'm accepted for my choice in transportation by my peers. Just try to keep a low profile and be prepared to justify your priorities.

Drive a civic daily Entrance too steep to get in and work in a shady neighbourhood. A few weeks ago someone dumped some chicken wing bones on my car.

Yes, every day. I guess the concern is salary ("we're paying that guy too much")?
First, screw that, drive your car, it's probably not a legitimate concern. And IF that was to happen, it would likely be based on your position. Exec - M3! Mail room (unfairly or not) - M3?!? Cheers

I drive it everyday. I guess it depends what you do. If you are attorney it is probably no big deal. If you are rolling up to the your job at the Gap, it may raise questions.

I actually think an M3 is a really good car for this - assuming it is in a non flashy (i.e. not one of the Lime Rock orange ones) color. To most non-car people, it looks like any other 3 series. The other car enthusiasts know that it is a bit more special but that's OK, if they are car people, they probably won't judge. It's also not crazy expensive (e.g., not like an exotic) and while prices have come up quite a bit since the E36 version, I don't think the M3 has a reputation for being that expensive even for those who know what it is.
I've given this topic a bit of thought because I drive my M3 to work specifically because I am concerned about the image of driving my Porsches to work (which I avoid doing). But with the M3, I am pretty comfortable. |

That is a fact. +!. If he likes cars then you are good. If he is not a car guy, good luck take it on the chin.
