One of the reports I read, said they didn't actually get stuck right away. They took the wrong road, got up there and it was snowing real hard so they turned around. But it was late, they got kind of lost (if you've seen any coverage it's a maze of logging roads) and decided to stop and sleep for the night. It's when they woke up that they were snowed in.

Not sure how accurate it was, but it explains a few things.

Also appears that if they'd mellowed on the gas usage the snow melted pretty quick. They could've driven back out.

Just a whole lot went wrong and compounded itself.

I just read the latest on this tragedy following the autopsy report, and how Mr. Kim was very motivated to travel 8 miles in search of a town he thought was only 4 miles away. The town was actually 15 miles away. He died of hypothermia.

Makes me want to prepare a small backpack survival kit with GPS, firestarters, freeze dried food, first aid, batteries, blanket, gloves, etc.) and just keep it in the trunk at all times.

I wonder what I'd do in their situation. Could I bring myself to sit and wait it out?

Don't forget an extra cell phone battery ... I'm curious now to googling to see if they sell add on external antennas for phones to increase their range. Seems like in the past decade that's how they've finding missing people in the mountains.

I saw that yesterday, but I'm wondering if it's actually accurate? Other maps don't indicate that they made it that far up the road initially.

I wonder if BMW assist would reach remote areas like that.
