There are 5 people in total. 3 Civilians, 1 Guard, 1 Cop

Three of the Civilians had to pay $10 each to the cop. The cop was being nice that day so he gave back $5 to the guard to give it back to the Civilians. However on the way back, the guard took $2 and gave $1 each to the Civilians. So in total the civilians only had to pay $9 each.

Now if you combined $9 x 3 = $27, and if you add the $2 from the guard, making the total of $29. What happened to the $1???

I ran across this question before and I still can't figure it out...

Anyone know?

Out of the 27$ paid by the civilians, 2$ out of that 27$ is with the guard, so it doesn't need to be added on top of the 27$. So the real question is where is the 3$? It's with the civilians.

They are just misleading you.... You don't add the $2 to $27.

$25 is with the cop

$2 is with the guard

$27 TOTAL

The 3 civilians paid $9 each = $27 TOTAL

the $1 is missing because the cop only gave the guard $5 and not $6. So the cop has the missing dollar.

Civilians paid a combined total of $9 x 3 = $27. Like you stated above.

Cop's total is $30 - $5 = $25

Guards's total is $5 - $3 = $2

Now for the basic math: Civilians total = (Cop + Guard total)
$27 = (25 + 2)
$27 = ($27)
Totals equate to each other. Nothing is missing
