I need more low end torque - I think its time for a super charger.
I just picked up my 2011 M3 on Friday and I finally hit 200 miles of the odometer today so I decided to turn on "M" mode and do a dead stop launch on the 101. I was extremely disappointed with the bottom end torque the car had to offer. You have to understand that im coming out of a 2008 JB3 335i and the low end torque was a killer on that car, to be honest I would have smoked my M3 with my 335. So much for the old saying "there is no replacement for displacement" lol
Down to business - I need some well seasoned veterans to chime in and give me some advice on what to do here. Im thinking about pulling the trigger on a Super charger that has low RMP spool rates. I need to somehow bring this car above 500 hp and I need to build it to last and not blow up on me. What recommendations do you guys have for a good supercharger that can be a installed into a daily driver that I will most likely beat the hell out of on the weekends. I also need a shop that knows what its doing in Southern California to install it for me. Oh yeah.....And I want to keep my total costs under or around 10 grand if possible. Besides that I LOVE my new M3 & wouldn't trade it for any other car out there !! Thanks in advance for any help you guys are able to offer me. |

The car isn't even close to broken in at 200 miles, and you're launching it 3 times already? How old are you? Low end torque? The M3 reaches max torque at around 3500rpm and keeps it all the way to 8400rpm, it has plenty of low end torque. More torque than a c5 z06, which happens to have more torque than a 335.

Quickest way to get that kind of power is the ESS 535 S/C kit. Having said that there is a learning curve to the V8 M3. AFTER the break-in, you will learn this engine produces CRAZY power up top. Give it a chance first and learn your car.
Congrats. |

The break in period is your friend, especially if you plan on putting on a supercharger and adding stress to the engine. That being said, it's not like your engine is going to blow up tomorrow because you rode it a little hard a little early (ok, a lot early). There are a lot of good supercharger kits out there, but I've never had one so I won't give an opinion that's not based in fact. I'm sure there are plenty of guys on here that will chime in. Good luck, and make sure to post pics!

I have the ESS VT2-600 kit, making around 625 flywheel hp. It's a centrifugal blower, so if anything, I lost "low end torque", so I wouldn't recommend an ESS kit.

Why are you launching at 200 miles if you want this car to last?

If you want a chisel, get a chisel. If you want a scalpel, get a scalpel. Why buy one and expect it to behave like the other? By nature, if you modify a scalpel to be a chisel, it will no longer be a scalpel. Likewise, if you modify a chisel so that it's a scalpel, it's no longer a chisel. One isn't better than the other. They are different tools, for different jobs.

Why get a SC? Your just gonna end up pulling it back out when you return your lease

You're not going to pick up low-end torque with a supercharger. It only adds torque where there already was torque in the first place.
Before you decide on doing that though, break in that V8. You'll figure out that the 335's short and tapering power band cannot hold a candle to this beast! |

I totally understand that the break-in period is somewhat important, what i was taking into consideration is that the engine is ran at high RPMS in Germany before it is installed into the chassis. With that being said I totally understand that the stress on the engine is different when bearing weight. I also understand that the torque is logarithmic on the M3. The biggest problem im running into believe it or not is the lack of "Road" I have here in Hollywood CA & the roads are very dense & compact. So in order to train the engine I have been doing mini 6000 RPM Sprints very carefully here and there without jeopardizing the well being of pedestrians. Today was simply a training exercise I performed on the highway. I guess im just eager to tear this beast apart and see what it could possibly do with a little more forced induction under the hood. This will be the 7th BMW that I will have modded and so far it offers the most potential for superior function.

It's more of a mindset with an M3. You have to drive it differently than other cars. Before the M3, I had an LS1 SS Camaro. This was more of a torque machine, so I could drive around at lower rpms and get my power there. In the M3, you must shift down to the lowest possible gear, and the thing will launch like a rocket. Cruising around at 3krpm is normal in this car, because it redlines at 8400rpm, where cruising around in the SS at 3k rpm would have been nuts. Drive the car to the motors strengths, that means high rpms and lower gears. Just don't do that until you break it in.
