How WIDE do you want it?

I've been eyeballing several wide angle lenses for a while now and I'm slowly getting closer to purchasing one...

I've narrowed it down to:
-Canon 10-22mm
-Tokina 11-16mm

I can't choose... I've heard the Tokina is sharper but the Canon is wider.. and I would be mainly shooting landscape/ architecture so the extra width could really help.. What do you guys think? And also whats the gripe about buying used lenses? Do you guys recommend it at all? I'm assuming that if I find one in mint condition, it wouldn't be a problem. Thanks in advance.

I've had the 10-22 for a few years now. Good lens and I'd recommend it, but the corners are somewhat soft. I've heard that the 11-16 does better in this regard, and I'd get one if I wasn't planning to upgrade to full frame early next year. Here's a few random 10-22 scenic shots, the first couple at 14mm, the next couple at 10 and the last the obligatory Z4 shot at 14. I certainly don't find the 10-22 to be "too wide" on a crop frame body.

If I were buying another ultrawide for crop format today, yes I'd probably choose the 11-16 over the 10-22, both for the potentially better sharpness (though I might want to cherry pick a good copy) and the times I've wanted f/2.8 in a wide lens. In fairness though, I haven't shot with an 11-16 and am just going by reviews I've seen.

My lens at 10mm does not look like that. Is it because I have a cropped frame or something?

People have been telling me that because the D60 doesn't have a full-frame, 10mm is most likely seen as 15mm instead because it has a 1.5x crop factor or something. Agh!

While that's true as far as it goes, the fact of the matter is that full frame ultrawide angles are almost always longer than 10mm (the Sigma 12-24 is the widest fullframe lens I know of). The zooms that range down to 10-11mm are typically designed to work only with crop frame cameras and replicate the effect of conventional full frame ultrawides that go down to 16-18mm.

So you're not missing something by using a crop frame camera with a 10mm lens. Rather, you are using a specialized crop-frame lens that is allowing you to do what an conventional ultrawide angle lens will do on a fullframe camera.
