Tell that to the racing teams, they sure are wasting a lot of dollars on their racing fuel for a whole season. I guess those performance curves posted above are false as well.

As engines continue to use electronics to create peak performance, fuel makes a difference. It is slight in most cases, but they are set to run with a determined octane. So a lot would depend on the car and your desire for peak performance to say it is worth it.

I remember CR conducting a test to show that the increase in mileage was not worth the cost difference.

Sorry. No expert here. Was just mentioning what I remember reading from Consumer Reports. Have no idea if it's BS or not. Personally I wouldn't take a chance and I go with what the manufacturer says.

Best regards, south

98 is CHF 1.84/l right now (~EUR 1.17)

The loss that results from retarding the spark advance can vary from 10% at low rpms to 1% as the engine reaches the higher rpms. This is a pretty general statement though, and does not necessarily directly address the 95/98 scenario.
I remember reading somewhere that the best estimates were 5% lose in power, which remember wouldn't result in a 5% lose in performance. Fuel ecomony is also affected and in this the best estimates are 2~3mpg depending on driving conditions. These results were based on a Golf GTi Mk5.

But lucid is correct that the effect varies in relation to engine revs.

P.S.

I wish I could remember the book I read this in.
