i never said because they're watching means they're doing shit about it, because it's obvious they aren't. whatever it is, it's probably more money than bmw wants to spend to fix it. that's not acceptable to any of us. porsche pdk does it right, there's no excuse for bmw's dct.

Here's my letter:

Quote:
Dear Emily,

I am VERY happy to see your oranization taking an interest in this issue. It is a VERY dangerous problem with this vehicle that BMWNA is WELL AWARE of, but INSISTS that it is "normal behavior" for my car/transmission. I brought the car into the dealer, and they were able to reproduce it, but they were told by BMW that this was "normal behavior."

The problem occurs when you slow down- like for a turn, but do not come to a complete stop. The DCT transmission seems to have trouble figuring out what gear to select because when you step on the gas to accelerate, there is a very significant delay in the onset of power- up to 2-3 seconds. By this time, the driver is usually really digging into the throttle. The transmission finally picks a gear, which results in the car suddenly lurching forward, sometimes invoking the anti-skip control.

The danger in this behavior occurs when making a turn into on-coming traffic after slowing down to around 10-15 MPH. After the turn, the car is positioned in the traffic lane, but you have NO POWER to accelerate into the flow of traffic. The oncoming cars are now closing in on your car at a fast rate, and you're basically stuck. This situation is most pronounced in the "Auto" mode of the DCT transmission, but also occurs to a lesser degree while in the manual mode when you select second gear in preparation for the turn. It is also very repeatable in both modes.

These problems started occuring after a previous recall on this transmission where the engine would stall under hard braking or not shift under hard braking. The recall fixed that problem, but introduced this problem, which occurs almost every day whereas the previous problem only occured during a specific situation.

Thank you for looking into this dangerous matter.

Thanks for all your support to those who commented.

I also got the E-Mail from Emily today and responded

That's why I posted it... to help my brother's out.

Just make sure you guys include the VIN when filing a complaint, or they don't take it seriously.

Got a call NHTSA regarding DCT

Received a call from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today regarding the complaint I filed about the DCT lag many months ago. They just wanted to know the details. They are currently in the initial stages of the investigation. Have any of you heard from them? She said she had already called a few others and that they were aware of this forum.

Yes, a few of us have been contacted by email as well. I believe you are the first who has reported getting an actual phone call though. Its great that they are listening to us. However, it would be ironic if the new software update (33.2) actually does fix the problem just as the NHTSA finally gets involved.

Didn't know about another update. I asked my SA the other day and he didn't know of anything new either. Do you know if it's out?

BMW is acutely aware of how many complaints have been filed with the NHTSA. Another thread about the issue is not going to help. However, I responded to Emily this morning.

I just heard from emily as well this morning and am awaiting an email from her as well! maybe something will come of this.

A little off topic but does anyone know is this "lag" just with BMW and their DCT or is it a known issue will the other cars with this type of tranny to include Ferrari, Nissan, and VW?

racedoc, check the nhtsa website to see how many complaints there are. Last I looked it was 20 something I think. Not many in the grand scheme. But as you point out, Emily from NHTSA is now involved and is contacting people who filed a complaint. If the latest fix from BMW doesn't solve the problem (and it does show promise, so lets hope it works) then then having the NHTSA in the mix should, hopefully, get some movement on the issue.

Got this via email today after filing a complaint about 4 weeks ago. I'll probably call her on Monday:
Dear BMW Owners,

My name is Emily Reichard and I am an investigator with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the US Department of Transportation. I am interested in the report you filed with us regarding your 2009 BMW M3 transmission. Can you describe to me what happened when you were driving the vehicle and the specifics of the event (i.e. where, when, at what speeds, how often, etc.)? Did any warning lights or noises occur when this happened? Did the problem ever place you in any unsafe or dangerous situations? If you saw a dealer, what was their remedy for solving the problem and do you find that it worked? Have you been notified of the DCT reprogramming as stated in Recall #08V-595? If so, was it performed and has this remedied the problem? Any other pertinent information regarding this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and have a great day.

Emily Reichard
Assistant Investigator, US D.O.T.

Here's the link to file a complaint:

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/Consumer.cfm

Just be sure to include your VIN or it won't count.
It only takes a few minutes. I know there are more than 20 DCT owner's here with this issue.

Sent in my report to the NHTSA

Mine is a 9/08 production, no stall, but LOTS of slowing down lag resulting in many close calls.

+1 Kev. Mine is also a 9/08 build with all the same things you mentioned. Matter of fact, I think we have the same color too. DOH!!
