Rear Wheel Drive TOYOTA Coupe!

I've read a couple articles about toyota introducing a rear wheel drive coupe/hatchback like the old '85 corolla hatchbacks. I feel this is going to be hella fun car to mod, drive, race, drift and etc. Regardless of what I own when it comes out, i'm getting one. No it will not replace my 135i, it will be in addition to.

HERE'S MORE INFO ON THE CAR:

Within days of announcing Toyota's formation of a "Committee to create interesting cars," this summer's Best Car Plus magazine reveals that the long rumoured new AE86 type car has indeed been spawned by the group and should be in showrooms in the winter of 2008.

The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru.
And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money.

I love what i'm reading about this car. I sincerely hope Toyota is able to pull this off. I think a sticker between $16,500.00 - $18,000.00 is very reasonable. I believe $12K may be difficult to pull off, but if they are able to, they will not be able to keep 'em in stock.

It's certainly intriquing! I keep wishing that Honda would introduce a modern CRX.

Sounds good, but looks like the botched the design. A few minor changes would be a huge improvment.

Holy crap that thing is fugly. Looks like a cross between a Civic Si, a prius and a Celica GT. I hate the way toyotas drive. I'm sure the rice heads can't wait to get a hold of that.

But hey, at least the rear wings they will throw on are actually applicable as opposed to fwd hondas.

I'm very interested to see what other cars this special committee will yield, paitence will be required. One things is for sure: Toyota needs RWD in it's lineup, as of now their products lack emotion.

Toyota makes very solid products, but I agree about the lack of emotion. Lexus is improving, but they still leave me a little cold. I often wonder why even smaller companies like Subaru are able to include more emotion in their products. :iono:

I agree with your comment. Toyota needs to wake up and get back into the game. I've owned two 350Z's so far. The 350Z is selling extremely well for Nissan as well as the G35 coupe and sedan, not to mention the new G37 coupe with 330 h.p. available with 6-speed manual and available FOUR WHEEL STEERING! The new G37 is gonna rock. Heck the new '07 G35 Sedan 6-speed sport is hella fun to drive.

Oh yeah back to Toyota. Why in the world would Toyota/Lexus totally give this market to Nissan. Toyota needs this rear wheel drive coupe above as well as another Toyota Supra. A Supra of today would sell like freakin hotcakes. I owned a 2002 IS300 and I loved it. It was a fun sporty rwd Lexus. I have to admit I do love the power of the new IS350, but I feel the car lacks in the looks department. It's bland and looks very luxurious, too luxurious. It should have a more sporty look like the first gen had and it should also be offered in a coupe.

Oh yeah Nissan will not be able to produce enough new GT-R's to keep up with demand. Wake up Toyota. The 350Z turned Nissan around. No not everyone purchased a Z, but everyone saw them. The Z got people interested in Nissan again thus more floor traffic = more sales. A new Supra would do so much for Toyota and their sales.

Truth is, Toyota doesn't need sales, they need an image builder(what the 350Z is to Nissan). Nissan/Honda offer cars and brands that cater to the enthusiast at very reasonable prices. I'd never buy an Infiniti G, I think the styling looks horribly bland, and will age to crap in no time(a problem most Japanese cars have). If Toyota builds a Supra, and Nissan a more attractive and roomy Z, then no doubt the 1er's chances will grown smaller and smaller. As it is, the Japanese are very good at keeping secrets, so we may not know or see anything til Tokyo at the end of the year.

Yay! If it really sticks to weighing only 1,000 kg's, I will be impressed.

It's sort of like BMW saying the 135i is the return of the 2002ti. I hope Toyota will stick to their word!

You hate the way Toyota drives? Maybe you hate how their econ cars drives but their sports cars are actually pretty well. In fact I have a 2000 Celica GT and it is one of the better handling cars I've ever driven, especially for a FWD car plus its light. The AE86 (the old sports hatch Corolla) was also legendary in its ability to handle, light weight, and seemingly drift oriented chassis thus its hype in its revival. I also like how you threw in how much "rice heads" would love this car when it's obvious you know nothing about its history.

Anyways, with it being so cheap and if there is a good aftermarket for this car I smell a nice light speed demon.

I'd buy one. I am watching the development on that car quite closely. My first (owned) car was a 1986 Toyota MR-2, with the same twincam as the AE86. What a blast... Still the most "fun" car I've ever owned. Talk about throttle adjustability...

And >30mpg no matter how hard I flogged it!

I suppose its okay for what it is, but the boy racer celica is no sports car, the steering is numb and the torque steer sucks. People who own them are entitled to like them, obviously. I do not.

Torque steer in a celica? Naah. Neither the base, nor the "fall off the hot cam" GT-S exhibits anything close to torque steer. I've driven them in anger, and even though I didn't like the GT-S as much as my Integra Type R, it's still a good handling little car. The GT's used to rip it up in their auto-x class.

The MR-S handled pretty nicely.

I don't think anything they make right now is remotely interesting, however.
