Megan Racing exhaust questions

Hello everyone.

Just finished installing my new Megan racing exhaust on my e90
M3. It was this or the OEM mod and have heard both sides of the story.

The Goods: haven’t found anything yet.
The bads: alignment of tailpipes are “off”.
Got stuck buying hardware for it to mount to OEM hangers.
The worst of this is:
This may crazy but, would you believe me if I said I don’t really hear a difference between the stock exhaust and this aftermarket exhaust? There is some bass at take off but that fades away quick.
I feel I hear the motor over the exhaust.

Can anyone verify this? What difference do you feel after install?

Mine is definitely louder and deeper than stock. People love it. My wife hates it. Had it on the car for 3-4 years but plan to go back to stock to quiet things down.

S65b40 is an incredibly loud engine induction wise, windows up you’ll never hear an aftermarket exhaust over the scream of the induction. Even windows down the exhaust will be battling the roar of the induction.

I installed my Megan about a month ago and I definitely hear a difference, I also think the sound got a little more refined the more I drive and put miles on the new set up. Very happy with the Megan Exhaust, this is with the stock x pipe too.

That s65 motor is definently a “buzzkill” for my exhaust

For those who have this exhaust, as soon as you installed it, what were the differences you noticed as you were driving right after install. Just want to focus on what you say so I can get an idea.



Also, were anyone able to correct the issue for left side tips stick out an inch more then the right?

I assume that you purchased this exhaust brand new, correct? Brand new exhausts require some break in period from my experience. Ive had several Xpipes that have been brand new, and I also have a brand new Eisenmann Race rear section on my car. All of it has gotten louder over time.

I also had a Megan Racing rear section back in the day and it too did the same thing - again, from my experience. I will say that it isnt the loudest exhaust option to choose from, but if you plan to get an Xpipe, that will certainly open things up (from both a power and sound perspective).

Megan cat back sounds the best with test pipes,I have Rogue test pipes and Megan cat back.Sounds deep at lower rpms and screams on top.

Mines sounds great! I took my cats and resonators off and Sounds awesome. fitment was a small issue, but corrected that eventually.

I had this exhaust when I first got my car, I couldn't hear a difference either with stock x pipe. It looked good and saved a little weight. I then bought a cheap x pipe and had a few fitment issues and it didn't sound very good so ended up scrapping all of it.

You are correct. Brand new.

Weird to hear you say that an exhaust needs to be broken in. you could be right as I have no knowledge or experience in this but will take your word for it.

My intention will be to move onto the x pipe, maybe, followed by tune since I’d go for macht Schnell(Catless I believe). I

Before that, I’d like to enjoy the car with the exhaust I purchased.

Edit. Surprisingly enough Megan racing confirmed that there is a break in period for sure. I wish there was a before and after video clip of this happening. Maybe I should look into making one

I'm looking into this exhaust as the BW x pipe I have made the car way too loud with the oem 2 pipe mod.
What type of hardware was purchased to make the Megan exhaust fit?

You need 2 bolts and 4 nuts. The stock exhaust have a nut welded on which the Megan does not. Wasn't a huge deal for me.

I have a Megan Exhaust paired with a AFE HFC with no resonators and love the sound of the megan with the x pipe. Beside the acceleration I surprised no one has mentioned the sound when decelerating. Has such a nice exotic note to it.

I too had the OEM Mod with the AFE x pipe and it was stupid raspy and loud. Megan did the trick not to mention the weight savings as well over the OEM.

To the OP go aftermarket x pipe or test pipes as others have mentioned to open the Megan exhaust sound.

I chose the Megan exhaust for the sole purpose of eventually moving into X pipe, after reading threads comparing OEM mod vs Megan, but needed input from everyone regarding the exhaust ALONE. The fact I need to throw in a few extra grand(x pipe+tune) to make it sound exotic like the higher quality brands, is nuts.

And your right, when the car is decelerating around 3K and below, it does have a nice tone. I’m trying to enhance the mid range RPM range as I do not hear anything over the s65.

I have the Megan Racing exhaust (came with the car from the previous owner), and my brother still has the stock exhaust on his E92. There's definitely a difference on startup, cruise, and WOT. That said, I don't think it's as aggressive or different-sounding as a lot of other exhausts out there. For me, I think the exhaust does a good job of imparting the traditional V8 rumble, as well as the S65's more exotic high-RPM wail. Maybe give it a couple hundred miles, and if you're still left wanting more pony up for an X-pipe. There's no missing the difference that thing makes.

Well said.

I will continue to breakdown the exhaust metals to hopefully obtain a better overall exhaust sound. So far, biggest difference I notice is during take off, up to probably 3500 rpms and then revs dropping from 3500. 4500rpms and that v8 sound takes over.

I guess if I switch back to OEM, then would notice the difference better.

I did hear an e90 m3 drive back by with a Gintani exhaust, and continued to hear it a block down. It sounded awesome but it is deafening.

Same experience here. I have AA test pipes paired with Megan catback. sounds so good to me and plenty loud for a family car in a neighborhood. once in awhile i get the itch to shop around for other exhaust's but i have yet to find anything for the price and that sounds so much better that it is worth the swap for me.
