PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Program Control Units (DCT)

MODEL
E82, E88, E89, E90, E92, E93 vehicles with DCT transmission produced from 1/08/2008 to 8/31/2010

SITUATION
Due to errors in the diagnostic software of the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) module, the "Freeze frame data" of the DCT memory can not be read out when using aftermarket scan tools.

CAUSE
DCT software error

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E90, E92, E93 M3 vehicles with the S65 engine and DCT transmission and E82, E88, E89, E92, E93 vehicles with N54/N54T engine and DCT transmission which were produced from 01/08/2008 up to 08/31/2010.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 575. If code number 575 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 575 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

PROCEDURE
Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.39.0 or a more recent version.
E8x/E9x – Integration level (new): E89x-10-09-501 or higher.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to Centernet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
Thanks for that. I'm cheduled for service on Saturday and may see the same update.

How do I schedule an appointment for the software upgrade to my brain so I rev match perfectly on downshifts in my 6mt?

Hopefully the patch includes the auto stop when backing up just before making contact with anything and the 360 degree anti blind spot capability.

ahh the possibilities..... auto calculations for determining exactly when you should accelerate or stop on yellow lights, anti curb rash, advanced rock chip to windshield warnings....

I'm at the dealership right now getting my 1200 mile service done, and there are no recalls for my 2011 DCT M3. Maybe BMW wants to get all cars in to receive this software update.

When's your manufacturing date? I noticed the DCT upgrade only covered cars up to Aug 2010, the assumption is if your car was born after this date you have the updated software.

My car was built on Aug 26th. However, another sw update was made at the port on Sept 19th. I think the last patch was the diag tool patch. This main sw update was already on my car.

All I can say is the DCT works flawlessly.

Likely this is a "service action", not a "recall". Let us know - I have an '08, but not DCT.

so i decided to call for clarification. this was how it went...

me: hi, i received a call from you and set an appt for nov 1st. can you tell me if it's safe for me drive with this recall? i have a long trip this weekend.

dealer (appt scheduling gal): yes, it's safe.

me: ok. that's good to know. what is this recall exactly.

dealer: let me look (took about 5mins for her to boot and log on her system). it's a programming recall.

me: i see. can you be more specific?

dealer: let me look. it's a program update to prevent your system being frozen.

me: oh. are you sure it's safe to drive? i dont want my car to stall or shut down while driving on the highway.

dealer: yes, it is safe.

me: thanks. see you on nov. 1st.

-----------------------------------------

with that, i still hope it's safe drive. i have 2hr+ each way trip this weekend. i hope i dont stall/stop while doing 65mph+.

If anyone has had this done already please post the duration of the service call.

I hate these software updates as the damn computers seem to crash so frequently and need to restart the update, or at least that's what they claim.

I can buy a new Mac and move the 500mb of files from the legacy machine in a couple of hours max. This may require days to complete. Doesn't this seem crazy?

From one of the posts above describing the recall, it has to do with the system freezing when using aftermarket scanning tools on the OBD port. I honestly wouldn't think most people would give a damn, but it's good that they're fixing it. Nothing to worry about in day-to-day driving.
