in the market for an SLR. need recommendations

Hey guys! With black friday right around the corner im searching to take advantage of some deals. Im looking for a decent SLR camera but havent got a clue on what to look for. I want to take nice shots of my car and a camera for family events. Anybod have any recommendations to what cameras and where to buy? thanks!!

oh and if it films it would def be a great plus!

Bang for your buck is the Canon T2i. Great images, latest AF, latest processors, shoots 1080p 24/30/60 fps.

As far as equipment is concerned... the body is not nearly as important as the glass you use, imo.

If you insist on a dslr, then I'd recommend the Canon T2i as a body that'll be "current" for several years. You'd have to spend much more dinero to beat it.

For the uses you describe, I'd suggest a Canon G12. It's a very sophisticated point and shoot that'll rival many dslr bodies. If you get serious and really need a dslr, then you can buy that and use the G12 as a backup.

I started with a G7 (an earlier version of the G12) and now carry both a 7D and 5D MkII, but still find uses for my G.

I picked up a lightly used 50D for 60 w/ 3 batteries. Got the sensor cleaned for 30 bucks and bang brand new. Next best thing is probably a full frame. Which im way too poor for.

T2i is good but if you want a higher fps the 50D is where its at. (aka sports photography). And coming from a rebel I love the wheel so much more than the D pad.

Looking at the EXIF data from the shots in that thread those pics appear to have been taken with a Canon 5DII and 24-70L lens (fine gear, but a LOT more money than you probably want to spend on a first SLR).

I'd second the recommendations on a cheap Canon T2i or Nikon equivalent.

That rig cost over $3000, but more importantly, even with that equipment you're unlikely to take that high a quality image right off the bat. It's going to take some time and work to get there.

People recommending "good glass" to the exclusion of a good body are forgetting the fact that you don't own a body yet. I'd say, get the T2i and "kit" lens. You've got to learn what you're doing to get the best out of the body and glass.

If and when you get serious, then buying great L-series glass will make sense, but wait until you're experienced enough to take advantage of it.

The reason to get good glass is because it never significantly depreciates. You may as well start investing in it early. Some of the "core" L lenses aren't that expensive, anyhow. You can get a 70-200 F4L used for $500 or less. Or a 17-40 F4L. Bodies depreciate like crazy. Get a used Rebel, 40D, or 50D.

He doesn't even own a body yet.

I think that he should buy a body that's current and will be so for two or three years. The T2i has a better, more current sensor than the 50D and will be good for several years. So what if it depreciates like crazy, it's still important to have a good sensor.

All my lenses are top of the line Canons, so I get what you're saying, but he needs to get a body also, so why not buy something current, with the latest technology?

I agree. That's why I didn't recommend the 7D to him yet. I see too many people shooting with a 7D or 5DMKII, and their photos come out worse than a $200 point-and-shoot.

Alternatively, I've seen many photogs shoot breathtaking photos with the older 20D, 10D, Rebel, etc.

I started with an XS and I switched to the T2i after 6 months. I vote for the t2i, however do not waste your money on a kit lens. Kit lenses are pure crap! Spend the extra $100-$200 and get a faster lens. I bought a Tamron 17-35 f2.8 for $200 and it's a good lens(does not cover the range of the kit lens but you can always walk a little closer, haha). You can even skip the zooms and get a nifty fifty for $100 to start with......it's a sharp lens for the money. it will be a nice portrait lens for a crop body. Your total will be anywhere from $800-$1000 depending on what lens you get
