E46 M3 GTR Street Car - Build Project Thread

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Please be aware this is a VERY picture intensive build thread.

(place holder for build sheet link)

The following build thread is the conversion of an E46 M3 into an E46 M3 GTR Street Car. Unlike most “GTR” conversion, you see people make, this is meant to be as close to factory as possible using parts that are available today. Unfortunately, some parts will have to be aftermarket, as the OE parts are no longer made or were never available.

This build is planned to be completed hopefully within the next two years to be a showcase car for the 2016 event that I am planning for the E46 M3. As with my other build to make a CSL, a fully document process of the change will be posted here along with another in-depth build sheet.

I hope you enjoy the process and I welcome questions and ideas, as my hope is to make this somewhat a community project. By this, I mean ideas are welcome but in the end may not be used due to time, cost, or just too far out there. Those enthusiasts who wish to help / learn in this build process are welcome to come out and help once the build begins.

What is a GTR Street Car?
The E46 M3 GTR street car was made for BMW to compete in the Le Mans Race Series. For a complete history on these cars there is some website that offer limited data. The few image that exist are pictured below. Love or hate looks, this is the plan on what the car will look like once I am done. A note is that some changes will be made as to accommodate parts being used and some customizing to make unique.

The Project Car
The car that is being used for the body of this project has been around on the M3 forums for a while. I am stating off with a 2003 E46 M3 in manual and 133K on the motor.
There will be a lot of parts for sale soon from this car in order to fun the build. If you need parts, please check the for sale section to offer your support in this build.

The donor parts car will be a E9X M3 for the motor transmission and other bits. This is still in the process of being scourced.

Project Cars History
The car I was told started off life with screen name Mr. wolfe. Here are the images I could find of the car online at the beginning. No history beyond this:

Car moving out west

Car was packed up and shipped out west to start its new life on the other side of the US. The car as you see in the images needs some TLC but over all in is in good shape for what is needed.

The real motor from the Street GTR was a 4.0L V8. The motors were all custom and the S65 is loosely based on these motors. As I am not a millionaire and I am trying to be close to factory as possible, the S65 is the right choice.

Gonna watch this one...that poor M3 was beat to **** over the years especially in Tsnipe's possession. Mr. Wolfe is an avid community M3 owner and knows a lot about the car. Good luck with the build although not fond of that rear valence...this will be interesting!

I think that's the perfect engine for it. This thing is going to be an absolute monster.

I remember Wolfe, his car was IMMACULATE. Glad the OP is rescuing this thing, it needed it

S65 vs S62 in an M3 GTR replica….. Seems much less authentic than going with an S62 (given year of development, implementation, and overall look).

However, you made some points about the GTR motor being more similar to the S65 than the S62?

I would go S62, but then again, I would never in my life do what you are about to so good on you sir. Im down to see an e46 with an S65 anyways

Correct. The real GTR motors were custom race built 4.0L motors that where S62 ish. The development and design from that motor is what was translated over to the S65. So in reality the real motors were hybrids of both. As BMW race motors are as much as a house as well as not available I had to go with what was in the ball park. All beat down the left field line near the warning track.

To answer the question that seems to be pooping up, I am using the quoted reply to someone else on another forum.

We have seen cars done before in after market wide bodies. We also have seen S62 swaps in various configurations. There are some E46 S65 swaps out there already but not in this trim setup.

I love the lines of the street car and wanted to try to make something unique to be different. Don't want to be like everyone else and would like to stand out a little at a big E46 M3 meet LOL.

So in short, one part the challenge of doing it, one part making this a community(ish) type build, and one part vanity.

I will post by build plan and build sheet once the project starts. It is already another XLS over kill.

I do have a question to the community. What color to paint the car. Just fair warning I may not follow the suggestion but just curious.

Wife is leaning towards LeMans or Topaz Blue. I am stuck on silver as that is the only color I have seen it in other than diecast models.

Cool man. Although I must say the S62 would look so epic under the hood

Best of luck and in for updates

Personally I say go authentic, and do it in TiAg.... And I don't even like that color. But it is the right color for the job.

For a more "racy" look i would go with le mans or laguna seca blue. For a more "everyday" look I would choose one of the darker blues up top

The last owner was from PA? Has it sat outside for a few winters? Wow..it looked immaculate before.

Good luck with the project. Excited to see the outcome!
