Steering feel - fix with software?

Steering feel in power-steering cars is artificial and in the case of the M3 appears to be electronically controlled, given it's adjustability.

Does this mean that software changes, either aftermarket or as part of a BMW service could potentially improve steering feel in the future?

I doubt it. The amount of boost can be varied by software, but true "feel" of road undulations probably cannot be changed much. There are many posts that the steering is just fine, and I'm not too worried about it. If this were a track car, you would want every nuance of the surface revealed to your finger tips, but for a very sporty street car, that is of slightly less concern since you typically shouldn't dirve more than 7/10ths in those environs. For those times you take it to the track, I'm sure it will be just fine.

Repost - sort of

I posed this exact question some time ago. Granted it was buried fairly deeply and very well may have been OT. If you can control the steering boost with idrive there should not be any reason you can not get a hack or some other way to reduce the boost. I suppose it could be 3 fixed settings only but simply altering pressure does seem like it would be easy to hack. Although it is true that if the steering feels light a reduction in pressure should help it can not help steering that has other geometry/design problems leading to poor feel/sensitivity.

I really doubt playing with the boost will increase the steering feel "at the center". We should keep in mind that almost all reviews are fine with the feel once the steering wheel is rotated and the steering mechanim is engaged/suspension is loaded accordingly. The issue is most likely about the specifics of the linkage between the steering wheel and the suspension/front wheels.

BMW always changes their steering... I thougth the 91 BMW 3 series had the greatest steering.... then I found the next generation was different but also very good... and now once again..... we have to get use to it.

I just hated the Active Steering on my 545i as it felt totally wrong.
