sparkling graphite is such an amazing colour especially with Palladium Silver leather, and seems to be really rare... I would have been happy with SparkG if i didn't get JzB, only downside is its not an M unique colour.

I think that all of these colors - Sparkling Graphite, Le Mans Blue and Jet Black - lose sales somewhat to their more popular counterparts (Space Gray, Interlagos Blue, and Jerez Black respectively).
I agree that the lack of jet black is surprising given how many people -- including me -- say jet black looks so good when clean.

First off, Lemans has been available for almost exactly one complete model year now, and in fact longer than Sparkling Graphite in the US since US M3 shipments did not start until early 2008 and the color was gone by late 2008 (MY 2009). Secondly, the difference in the poll (as of now) between SparkG and Le Mans is just one car. Third, if you remove the 2009 sales of Jet Black, assuming you divide by two, you get eight there (as of now) as well. So I am not following your logic at all.

my point is that sparkling graphite was the least selling colour at the time it was offered
both SG and LMB were on sale for about 9-10 months

heck even custom colours has overtaken it now

if it's any consolation
the sparkling graphite will be the E92s Henna Rott of the E30 M3
which was only offered for half a model year ('88) then stopped
but now commands a premium in resale
i know cuz i owned one
and they go for between 1-2K over the other colours

Yeah I hear you I just don't think it has anything to do with why it was discontinued like you had said. Jet Black did not sell well either in 2008 or 2009 and it was not discontinued and Le Mans did not sell that well in 2009 and it was not discontinued either. If BMW discontinued colors based simply on which is the least popular then one or both of those would also be gone now too. I'll guess that BMW planned long in advance to phase out Sparkling Graphite based on the fact that they were bringing in Space Gray.

(Of course, its all purely speculation to begin with since we have no idea how the results of this poll correlate to the real production totals. For that matter we don't even know if everyone who answered really owns a car.).

Yep.... I've seen a lot of E9x M3s on the road, and AW definitely doesn't equal 30% of the ones I see. Although we have a large sampling to get a poll from on this forum, there are many more owners of M3s that are not on any forum. So it may just be that AW is only most popular amongst forum users.

Why is it that there are 13 user names listed under Sparkling Graphite yet the poll only counts 8?
edit: 14/9 now

The other 5 votes went to the "Custom" count

Must be the ghost in the machine again.

You're right - that's really weird. And check out the custom color option also. Only three names listed and yet it says eight votes.

I wonder if it is a bug or is someone manipulating the results somehow.

Edit: I guess it is a bug since the number of votes missing from the second to last option (SG) is the same as the number of names missing from the last option (custom). IIRC the custom color option was added later. Maybe the software incorrectly attributes all votes made to the former last option to the new last option, but for some reason gets the names correct.

weird... the *custom colors* was there from the beginning. Sparkling Graphite was added later.

did the E46 have any color that was this dominant??
I don't know but I'm willing to bet that it did if BMW marketing (webpage and brochures) employed a dominant color.

I noticed this phenomenon when I had my 911s.

Most common color for a 997 GT3? White
Color of 997 GT3 in most Porsche propaganda: White

Most common color for 996 GT3? Yellow
Color of 996 GT3 in most Porsche propaganda: Yellow

Since the BMW brochures and web based advertising seem to have e92s as white and e90s as silver, I'm willing to bet that if the poll asked what type of M3 had what color (ie. a separate poll for e92 and e90), we'd see that, just as in the advertising, the e92's tend to be the white ones, while the e90s tend to be the silver ones.

That would be interesting poll to setup. I'm curious as well
