2008/2009 DCT or MT?

if you had the choice which would you go with, DCT or MT on 08/09? with additional 3 yr warranty on car.

I read the MT is good for 100k at least and the DCT is too new. but is expensive to replace about $10k. after the software issues in 08, not much of an issue.

I can see maybe getting bored of the DCT after the initial thrill of the crisp fast shifts.

I think the DCT is a good match for the engine, since the fun power is way up top and you have to work the gear box to access it. The DCT will find it for you faster than you can and do things you might not always want or bother to do, like downshift from 2nd into 1st.

I have a 6MT, but that is simply because I bought used and the car came with a manual. I don't mind it, but think the DCT is faster in daily driving as well as on the track.

I have 09 m3 DCT and love it. Faster than MT and more fun for me.

Drive both.

I was dead set on a 3-pedal car when I started shopping, and had actually tried to make a couple work out and the deals had fallen through. Then I got together with a friend who has a DCT car and took it for a long drive in the country and I was hooked. I bought one a week or two later. The rev-matched downshifts and the lightning quick upshifts match this motor extremely well. I am still a "manual transmission guy" and I would get 3-pedals in just about any other car, but in this car I really like the DCT.

So drive them both and see which one you have to have.

Then you have your answer. If you enjoy rowing the gears nothing can replace that. But if you are still curious just test drive both and then decide. No one on a message board can tell you what to buy.

You've really gotta test drive both. I had initially intended to go with a manual but after experiencing both I felt the DCT was a much better tranny for this car. I have 2 yrs with the DCT and it's still fresh and exciting every time out.

For sure personal preference. I love my DCT. I have drove both extensively (and both supercharged MT and DCT). If you are getting competitive, DCT is a faster setup which makes for a faster car. Love the MT but this is the truth. DCT is nice for the variety it offers if you are not racing or tracking as there are so many drive-logic choices. Full auto is butter smooth( better than most hydro autos) and full sport is, well, FAST! MT will give you the feel you know if you have always had a MT. Good luck and either way it is a win!

6 spd. The way the shifter knob looks on a DCT just wont do it for me. Nothing like the feeling of a manual transmission.

I was a manual transmission guy and had a MT E46M3 for almost 10 years and 100,000+ miles but had to get the DCT because my wife never learned to drive the manual. I have now had the DCT for 1.5 years and about 15,000 miles and would never buy a MT again if a car offered the DCT. I LOVE it. It is fun when you want it to be and easy to drive when sitting in traffic. I do live in NYC and sit in traffic all of the time but there is nothing like the crisp shifts of the DCT in the fast shifting modes.

Anyways.. I current drive an 6MT if i could go back i would choose the DCT... just so i can be lazy... LOL

die-hard MT fan here !

In fact if I was able to pull myself to settle for the DCT I would have had an M in my possession for months already....

Instead Im waiting out the building process for my MT

I bought a MT 6wks ago and love it! Test drove the DCT and loved it also but it just didn't feel right never having a clutch pedal.

Only thing I would say is if you sit in traffic constantly then I would want a DCT just for the ease and no left leg ache!

Love my 08 DCT. It is a personal preference, but unless you have a lot of love for the 6MT platform and value that over performance and convenience the DCT is better on paper (excluding maint. costs).

I've always had automatics in Mercedes, Audi and Lexus mainly because that's all they had. Then I moved into a few autosticks in Audi and Lexus as I bought newer used cars, and they sucked, but they weren't truly sports cars (IS300/350, B6 S4). They were not much different than a typical auto they just made it easier to "shift".
Long story short, when I went out to get my M3 I was set on getting a MT but the first one I found was DCT. I figured it would be fine for a test drive and fell IN LOVE with it. It offers the best of both worlds to me. It's engaging when you want it to be, yet it's a totally easy daily driver.
