Windows XP Help: No Desktop Icons & Programs

when i boot up the computer and im on the home screen, there are no icons and i can't right click either. all i have is my task bar below, but even if i press start-> all programs it says empty.

the only icons i do have are the ones in my task bar and they all are working like steam, sc2, antivirus, etc.

any thoughts to fix this? i would hate to reformat... help much appreciated, thanks guys.

There is a new variation on virus that makes all your folders both hidden AND read-only. You have to enable hidden folder view. Start, Run, Explorer.exe, Tools, Folder Options, View, Show Hidden files and folders.

Receptionist just had this this afternoon, here is what I did:

First, your taskmgr is prolly disabled right?

Go to start, run, go to c:\windows\system32\

Find taskmgr.exe, make a copy of it, then rename the copy to something else, random like jhgjwehgweg

Open it, close out the randomly named files running in the processes window [which are probably telling you your HDD is bad and you have a virus]

Run regedit (hkey, local user, software, microsoft, windows, current version, run), find the path of where the shit files were, go and delete them, then delete the reg key(s) that bring up the spyware

Reboot computer

Go to your control panel, internet options, clear ALL history, cookies, favorites data, etc

Go to c:\docs and settings, right click each hidden user folder and uncheck hidden, this should restore all shortcuts/start menu

Download & run MBAM (Malware bytes anti malware, www.malwarebytes.org), it should find a few items, one of which will be a reg. key that disables your desktop/right clicking, allow it to fix + reboot


Should be OK after that...
