the m3 e90 saloon (british for sedan) did its top gear power lap faster at 1:25.3 than the gallardo-that's pretty damn impressive! i have of course passed this info on to my gallardo-owning friend...

Ummmmmm...... sure it did. Did you perhaps notice that first, the Gallardo's lap was in the wet (unless, of course, you refer to the Spyder, which would be... interesting....), and secondly, that was the first iteration of the Gallardo, and not the LP560-4, which did the lap in 1:19.5, which sort of........ smokes the M3, just a little?

Also, different days, different temperatures, etc., etc.... valid comparisons can't really be drawn from the Top Gear times, as we all know....

I agree - the M3 is an amazing achievement, but a statement such as that is rather... misleading.

Bad news is, you still own a BMW and he has a Lamborghini.

Enjoy it--amazing car--how it looks, how it sounds. Someone in my neighborhood just got a white Superleggera LP570 and it sounds fantastic. I just got back from Las Vegas where I did a last-minute exotics track driving experience. Drove the Superleggera, then got a ride in one from a former Indycar driver. He floored it from a dead stop and I thought I was going to lose my lunch--the power was overwhelming.

Here's a quick clip of me in the black one:

You are a true enthusiast - being able to still appreciate an M3 which is obviously not in the same class an LP-560 - but still you can applaud the merits of the E9X M3 - even with its humble origins. The snobbery exuded by "some" drivers of exotics is off the charts - even from those that rent them

Thank you. Yes, at first, I considered the LP570 - what a gorgeous, menacing car. Love the carbon fiber, the rear wing, the side skirts, the alcantara..... but, in the end, it was too raw - the seats, too uncompromising... the LP560 suits my driving habits much better. I am SERIOUSLY jealous that you've done the Exotics Race Experience in Las Vegas!!! I would love to do it - I think my choices for cars would be: Aventador, LP570, 458, the McLaren (when it arrives), and the GTR (seriously! I think it would be the ultimate daily driver, and I've never driven one!).
"He floored it from a dead stop and I thought i was going to lose my lunch...." - thanks - I laughed my ass off when I read that. I know how you feel. It's so different being in the passenger seat - when I hit it hard driving, it's so different than being a passenger.

Haha, thanks. I just love cars. Mostly ALL cars (almost. The Renault Fuego that my Dad bought was an exception... ick, LOL). I guess I've been lucky - the exotics owners that I have met have virtually all been great guys - hard working, and just great at what they do for a living. I admire that.
Hahaha, very soon after I left the girl sitting on the hood, I wondered if i should have demanded a copy of the picture, but I'm not that quick off the mark, LOL.....

TTBear thanks for the read. I see I should have searched the forum for Gallardo and not it's platform. You answered a lot of my questions here. Thanks!

Although the gallardo looks and sounds sweet, atleast the earlier ones were disapointing in terms of power and performance. For a V10 they put down only 400 wheel horsepower on the dyno which is not great. A FBO m3 puts close to that so its really only the lightweight nature of the gallardo that makes it faster.

From a roll with a FBO it is surprisingly close as I have ran one several times with my friend who has one.

The original Gallardo's are almost 10 years old. It is an impressive engine and also not everything is about power, it is still a Lamborghini.

AWHP dyno results are much different that RWHP....... The average drivetrain loss for most AWD cars is 25%. 400WHP would be 500CHP which makes sense since the 2003-2005 Gallardo's were rated at 493HP (500PS) and the 2006-2008 models were rated at 513HP (520PS) with the exception of the Superleggera which had 523HP (530PS).

Lets look at performance numbers for Gallardos. The original 2003 Gallardos ran 4.1-4.3 0-60 times with quarter-mile times of around 12.4-12.5 at around 116-118 MPH. Current Gallardos (except spyders) all run sub 4 second 0-60 times and 11 second quarter mile times in excess of 120MPH........ Based on these numbers a healthy M3 DCT (6MT models are slower) is closely matched to an original 03 Gallardo but is definitely way out of it's league when compared to 2009+ models.

What about a full bolt on Gallardo, how do you think that race would look?!?!?!

Yes the M3 is a great car and we all know that, but how do you justify the comparison of an M3 to a supercar like the Gallardo, they are not even in the same league and are not meant to be. No matter how great the the driving experience of the M3 is, a supercar it will never be!

Had: 08 Lambo Spider: ( it's in a different ball park compared to a M3)
Now: 13 M3 Lime Rock Edition
Later: 458 Spider ( Next Year)
The M3 feels like a lessened exotic car. Hard to explain but the E92 is in the right direction to become a exotic sports car, as far as performance and feel. but it's lacking the power and weight. E92 needs more more power with sound. & a lot less weight.
