Is there a difference in oil pressure between 10w60 and 0w40? Both at operating temps and track temps? |

I also found that Castrol makes a 0W-40 also that is LL-01 approved and is relatively new as it started being imported into the U.S. March 2013. Its supposed to be a direct competitor to Mobil 1's 0W-40. I couldn't find the U.S. data sheet so I am posting the link to the Australia data sheet. Came across this on Bob is the Oil Guy. Haven't seen anyone mention or post about it? Hopefully I didn't miss it.

Are you sure this is right? I know BMW puts 5W-30 in the turbo'd motors in the 1M (N54) and the S63/TU (X5M, X6M, M5, M6). According to a BMW employee...the 5w-30 recommendation on the S54/62/65/85 does not apply when doing regular maintenance. Dealers should still put TWS 10w-60 in those motors.
Although I'm not 100% sure about the history but I do believe the S62 came out before Castrol TWS 10w-60 was invented.

Castrol 0w-40 doesn't seem to offer any advantages vs Mobile 1 (actually looks pretty similar).
After doing quite a bit of research, I'm most likely going to try this one: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=126&pcid=21 A little higher cold viscosity vs the Mobil 1, but higher high temp viscosity plus a very high viscosity index and is ester based. Think this is perfect protection for CA weather for a hard driven on roads and 3x year tracked car. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...1785851&page=1 Quote:

"stick to TWS 10w-60" says BMW Australia. "Nothing wrong with this oil. There is no directives from BMW M division."
Sayonara for me on this issue.

Nope, TWS was around well before the S62. Doug Hillary was one of the Castrol engineers, and he has written about its development on bobistheoilguy forum in the past.

I had a E39 S62 equipped M5 and when they 1st came out BMW used the 5 30 in these engines. They changed to the 10 60 in a TSB after a spate of engine failures in the early cars.

A good friend who was one of the first NA owners of the E39 M5, taking delivery in early Oct 1999, ran the spec 10W60, changing it every 5-6k miles spun a rod bearing at 95k miles. He had it fixed, maintained same maintenance schedule running 10W60 for another 170k additional miles when he pulled the bearings proactively -- they looked almost like new after 170k miles of use. Go figure.

I wonder how much of the switch to TWS 10W60 was due to keeping the oil at a sufficient viscosity after their 15,000 mile recommended intervals compared to the 5W30 which would shear down even further than it's 5W30 starting point.

Now that BMW is doing oil changes at 10,000 miles, why should they use an oil that has higher viscosity and probably costs more? A move about cost, I think.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
