What kind of oil is used in the first 1200 miles?

When I got my first car in 1987 I was told they used a special oil for the break in period, and that at the first service the normal oil for the engine is installed. The owners manuals of the next few cars I owned did not require any break in procedure.

The M3 is the first car I have broken in since 1987 next week the break in period is over, the 1200 mile maintenance is scheduled. My question is; is the oil the M3 comes with from the factory the same Castrol TWS 10W-60 that BMW recommends for the car in normal circumstances or is there a 'special' break in oil with different properties than that Castrol oil?

I am asking because i have read several threads where people claim the M3gets better fuel economy or more power after the 1200 mile service, where other people state that there is no difference in the computer software after the service. Maybe a different oil would explain it? So, any ideas?

I took euro delivery of my M3 and two different dealers told me when I tried to get the 1,200 mile service that the first oil in the motor was "break in oil" and not to run the car at high throttle openings or high speeds for prolonged periods because of this, despite having more than 1200 miles on the odo. I never got the service done over there, but two different dealers said the same thing, it's different.

No, the oil placed in the car when built is the same oil that should be used for its entire life. It is changed after 1200 miles, in order to remove metal shavings, etc., resulting from break-in.

Engines tend to "loosen up" over time, and it's not unusual for them to have more power and somewhat better economy after a few thousand miles.

However, special break-in oils are no longer used in modern engines.
