Experimenting with the new camera.... (1800x1196 pics inside)
Last week I bought a Nikon D300 with the 18-200 DX VR lens. In the week since, I've been playing around with settings and testing out different ways of taking pictures. I clicked off about 350 shots so far just goofing around basically.
I don't currently have any decent editing software, but I did install a trial version of DxO. The included "Capture NX" trial software hasn't been loaded yet. It's been a crazy week in general.... Anyway, I took a few shots in "RAW + JPEG" and decided to try out the DxO software on one picture. Here is the data on the picture: Nikon D300 Nikon 18-200 VR lens set at 80mm (handheld, no tripod, VR on) A: f/5 S: 1/4 ISO: 3200 After running through the DxO program, I resized them down to 1800x1196 from the original 4288x2848 (trying to keep the file size manageable.....) Original JPEG: Here is the DxO'd JPEG: This was just a quick pass at the picture, as I'm sure I didn't get all the settings right in DxO to really get the best corrections. But none the less, I'm pretty impressed with this program. Just thought I'd share. I'm clearly not up to the level of some of you guys (professional or damn near) but I hope to get there. Now if the PNW winters weren't so bad for lighting (flat, dull light and nothing but grays.....) I'd get some more shots in. Thankfully this isn't like my 35mm film days. It was expensive to learn back then!

Nice. It's kind of scary how fast the shutter actuation on these things grow. One day you're at 0 and the next day you're at 700.
I've owned my D300 for just 4 days and I'm already at 1741 actuations. |

Dude, that's 18 shots per hour, EVERY hour! What did you do, get the MB-D10 and shoot at 8FPS for 4 minutes straight?

Well the first 700 photos came from a tennis photoshoot. The other 1000...I can't say XD
Probably me drooling at the 8fps. There's a trick to allow 8fps without the grip, but you can only shoot at 8fps for 9 shots. It's kinda lame. Look it up on YouTube. |

I like it scott, I guess maybe try to take the same shots on a tripod with iso 100/200?
Not sure if theres a delay shot mode, so you dont shake the camera @ all when you press the button, try a really high F stop, with a long exposure, see how it treats you

I love the DxO software. With a full frame camera it'll almost totally clean up that noise at 3200. Did you download the adjustments for your camera and lenses. That makes a big difference over going with the generic correction.

This was done with the tripod (no corrections, just JPEGs...) D300 with 18-200 VR lens set at 22mm S: 13 seconds A: f/9 ISO: 100 I used a 2 second shutter delay so that I didn't disturb the camera. I'd like to get a wireless remote for it at some point...

I specified my body and lens when I did the install. I just haven't played around with the software enough to understand all of its capabilities and how to utilize them to full effect.
