Cold start whine?

Could anyone please give a listen to this clip and tell me what they think? It only happens on a cold start, the noise will go away after about 10 seconds from starting and won't occur again while the car is warmed up.

https://youtu.be/6MqBt-JcEQ0

Thanks in advance.

I replaced the idler pulley after seeing some threads that mentioned that being an issue. Also kept and eye on the power steering levels, but I haven't flushed the fluids yet.

That sounds awful. I wouldn't be driving it until you find the cause.

WTF is this my friend ? WOW ! My ears are bleeding !
I never heard this before on a S65 !
Personal I think (not sure) it comes from the Vanos-Gears , because you say it happens only on a cold start ..

Advice :
Call your nearest BMW/Dealer ASAP , and don't push your start button anymore!
This sounds absolutely not healty !
Let us further know how it goes..

had my steering pump + idle pulley replaced and can tell you it does not sound like this at all and also should not go away after car is warm. This sounds much worse but i don't think it's anything directly in the engine.

Check your power steering fluid to make sure it's not low. I had something similar and was low on power steering fluid so just top it off.

Exclamation

To me this sounds like the secondary air pump bearing. The secondary air pump (or whatever it's called on our cars) is used during cold starts to help warm up the catalytic converter(s). It pumps extra air into the exhaust manifold at the same time the mixture is set to be extra rich, so the extra fuel will light off in the cat. This lasts about 10 seconds on a cold start.

This was a common issue on my previous car (Mazda RX-8). Typically, this system is used on cars where the catalytic converter is a ways away from the headers to help meet environmental regs. On cars where the catalytic converter is closely coupled or integrated with the header, such as FWD with transverse mounted engine, this is not necessary.

I have this sound now and almost certain it's related to the secondary air pump but I don't know the solution yet

Tbh I think it sounds like the secondary air pump. You can try and unplug it and see if noise is still there but you’ll need to remove the plenum to do that since it sits at the very back on top
