AFE vs. Megan

so looking to do the first mod to my recently purchased m3..and naturally its the exhaust. now i originally planned to do the megan racing exhaust, but the AFE Mach Force XP exhaust has caught my attention. Now the AFE exhaust looks to be one that isnt made anymore (I know someone selling one). I included a pic of it below. Does anyone have any experience or know how the AFE sounds compared to the Megan, and which would you buy?

Neither. These options are no bueno.

Grab a used Dinan if you are worried about cost. Or just about any other exhaust.

I got my Megan for much cheaper than the AFE -> http://www.redline360.com/megan-raci...-MR-ABE-BE92M3

I have a stock xpipe, but the megan sounds good. it flows well, straight through, fits good, and you can't beat the price.

Both have a deeper tone, not "exotic", but i haven't heard my megan with test pipes yet.

What makes it "no bueno"?

The AFE is a great exhaust. With stock X pipe it is drone free, (the old version thanks to the large resonators) and with an X pipe it makes really nice noises - although it does get pretty bassy at low RPMs, like most S65 exhausts.

I prefer it's sound to the Megan but they are somewhat similar.

If you go with test pipes I like the Megan better, I felt the AFE was to bassy. The Megan with the TP's had a nice growl to them that was more high tech sounding than the AFE. This is my experience with TPs installed. Although the Megans do have a slight drone at 2200rpm, it is slight but it is there.

Dave

Here is a megan with test pipes. Ive had this exhaust since 2011 and it has not rusted, cracked, rattled in the cans or cause me any issues.

For 500 bucks this is BY FAR the best exhaust for the M3 if you like Nascar V8 rumble.

Or you can spend 5K+ for a akrapovic and loose bottom end and have WAY more low end drone.

No thanks!

MEGAN FTW!

PS: I would agree with Dave that once you add TPs to the megan it does loose some of its nascar v8 deepness. Not much, but I did notice that too. However, you get a much faster sounding exhaust note too IMO.

can't go wrong with megan for a sub $500 exhaust. I've had mine for 2 years with no problems. I always get asked what exhaust I'm running on my car and everyones always suprised to hear its a megan.

^^^ MS test pipes. Although any TPs would sound the same. They all do the same thing. Remove the primary CATs. I still have the secondary small ones for smell control.

I can also vouch that TPs with Megan sound outstanding. It loses a lot of the bassy rumble and it is replaced with more Corsa-like sounds up top. Sounds great.

After adding the MS X-pipe, the sound has changed significantly again. Sounds even more exotic, though significantly louder. The harshness that was still in the sound up top is smoother sounding.

Seems like Megan is the general concerns with the tp..what about in just replacing the axle-back..or adding a catless xpipe? Still Megan or does the decision sway?

Did you ever make a decision? I am thinking about picking up that exact aFe exhaust?

I ended up going with the Megan and had absolutely no regrets. It woke the car up and made it sound much more aggressive. No drone for me either (and I had paired it with Turner test pipes). Can't go wrong with the Megan!

Maybe I'm wrong but I think you guys are talking about exhausts for two different cars, OP has F80.

Lol definitely not! I don't think Megan racing makes an f80 exhaust either, not yet anyway lol

Thanks man! I have the chance to own the aFe at almost the cost of the megan. I have MPE now and want to kill the factory x pipe and know they don't get along with that too well.

The xpipe isn't too bad in muffling sound. The axleback is what I found killed the sound the most.

Are you looking to just run straight pipes down the middle? Or putting in a freer flowing X/H pipe?
