If you're curious about resale value...
I purchased a 2013 M3 (VIN: WBSKG9C58DJ973121) with 27,000 miles from Carmax for $40K back in July 2018.
Went in for an appraisal twice... 38,000 ~ 39,000 miles, they offered me $33000 1 year of ownership, $7K depreciation 44,750 miles, they offered me $31000 1.6 years of ownership, $9K depreciation - This is the same amount I owe on the car at the moment. The reason I went in this time, was there's a 2010 M6 with 19,000 miles. The difference for me to switch will be ~$5K-~6K. The car will have a warranty from the date of purchase for 5 Years, or up to 75,000 miles. |

That’s also trade in versus Carmax sale price, no? So apples to apples the true depreciation is a bit less. Not bad IMO given the miles you drove, about what I would expect for an E92. I suspect they’ll level off from here.

Negative about the trade-in value. The 6 pricing didn't make a difference in the offer they gave. They presented the $31,000 offer without a contingency of purchasing the 6. The only benefit I have of trading in the 3 with purchasing the 6 at the same time, is saving $2K in sales tax. For the 3 leveling off, yes I noticed the pricing (only looking at Carmax at 2013s) has been averaging at mid ~$30s. |

I mean their offers of $31/$33K were trade in values versus your purchase of $40K. I wouldn’t consider that $7-9K in depreciation since they would have offered you less than $40K the day after you bought the M3.

Or another way to put it, they don't intend to resell it for the same price they're offering you for the car.

What's the private sale value? Who cares what carmax offers, they're going to offer lower so they can sell for profit. I bet the private sale value of the car has not moved much in the time you've owned it.

that's not exactly how it works.
You're comparing what you bought it for next to what they would buy it back for. You need to add anywhere from 5-15 percent to there offer. And also if you paid $41k a year and a half ago that, to me is a little on the high side. I would put it closer to $37k at the time of purchase. They buy it from you for $31k and put it on the lot for $35k then sell it for $34k. You depreciation would be closer to $3-$4k. This would put it closer to the average between 8 and 15 percent annual depreciation. |

Excellent point, LakeSurfer. Of course, the depreciation curve is not linear. What we're seeing for quality examples with miles on the low side is a slowing of depreciation. As areyouamac pointed out, mid-thirties is still appropriate for the 2013 E92 M3.

Paid high retail and then wants to trade-in, this is how dealerships stay in business.

Good data.
Btw the depreciation curve of the M6 has to be double that of the M3. |
