That's a good deal, I was quoted $1,000 more than that, with install, up here in Canada.

Careful - you get what you pay for and I'm not sure how much installations cost in your area. With a nice car like ours you don't want some ghetto install. What's a good deal in NY may be a very bad deal in NC. I'd get some firm details from the shop before you spend the money. And look into the STi-R Plus - almost the exact same detector without the useless ZR4 jammers that the 9500ci comes with and much better software (modify individual Ka bands, turn off filters to increase range). Save some money and invest in real jammers when you're ready.

I've seen some horrendously botched 9500ci installs - antennas behind metal (attenuates signal), jammers behind grills (blocks light signal), and severely screwed up wiring. Any shop worth the $ will have accurate testimonials online, and not from sites they sponsor.

The ci is NOT the next gen of the ix - it's a completely different and MUCH better detector. M3 antenna >>>> M4 antenna on the ix.

The Redline is a GREAT second choice, if only they'd give it band segmentation and RDR off options. Ersin may know - does the STi Magnum have those options yet? It's the Redline's Bel twin.

That sounds a little more appropriate cost-wise.

You can read up all you want about radar detectors but we've installed pretty much every brand out there at some point for a customer. 8/10 customers we have use Valentine1 and almost every exotic car owner (meaning money no object) uses the V1 so that says a lot in my book.

Personally my background includes working 3 years while in school for a car stereo shop that sold both Escort and K40 (the guys who pay for your tickets) and I can tell you at over $1000+ a pop back then (1998) the units sold quite well but part of the reason is we did not sell Valentine1. My take has always been if they have to pay your ticket, it means court costs, insurance goes up and more hassle which proves to me their system did not work.

I've been using V1's in all my car's for over 12+ years now and personally I own 2 units but each of our vehicles are hardwired with a custom remote display setup so I can take it to each car, connect the main unit and go. The beauty of the V1 is it works damn well on the open road capable of sniffing cops out 1-2 miles away. In the city it is too sensitive but you should not be speeding on local roads anyways so we just turn it off.

I don't want this to turn into an ad for Valentine1 since I buy them at retail price just like you guys but I really do believe in this product. I even got my mom one for X-mas.

As they say pictures are worth more than words so I'll leave you with these shots in some of my cars over the years. Not all of them are BMW's but the concept is the same, hide the main unit and put the remote display within eye level line of sight and put the remote volume unit where you can reach it near shift knob because when you are driving fast, you eyes should NEVER be looking down in the ashtray!

No, the STi Magnum does not have BS/RDR options. Escort has promised those for the Redline but AFAIK, they still haven't made it into the RL yet. Seriously, I don't see why they aren't available for both the Redline and Magnum (and probably 9500ix) and definitely can't see why their top of the line Escort -- the 9500ci -- doesn't get it. Oh well, just makes the choice easier: the number one detector that Bel/Escorts make is the STi-R+.

Cheers.

9500ix that I never use. I live in the middle of the city and rarely drive more than a few miles. There are few police that patrol for speeding in Houston proper. I have not had a speeding ticket in over a decade. I don't drive slow either.

What do you guys do when you park your car someplace? Do you remove the unit and hide it in the trunk or something? My fear is that someone sees it mounted on the windshield and breaks in. I'd love to do a hidden unit, but it's a bit much for me right now.

What is the best position for a V1 or 9500ix to be mounted? Can it be too high or too low on the windshield of an M3? If you hide a V1 in a headrest, will it still detect laser?

Sorry for all the questions, this is the first time I've looked at radar detectors seriously...

Hidden headrest option will affect laser, this is why I do not recommend this setup. Defeats the purpose, we are working a custom rear headrest design that allows the unit to be exposed for laser detection.

It's not a good idea to leave the unit visible if parked for any length of time especially in questionable areas. Would you leave x4 $100 bills on your dash? Thieves will steal it and sell it on the open market easily and they know it. I simply un-plug it and hide it.

Obioban: I had this setup on one of my e46 m3's however this only works on e46 M3 that is 6-speed manual, not SMG's from what I remember.

Indeed, it's where the SMG display would be.

I had a Passport 8500 and V1, they don't work anymore.
I still have the RX65i, it still kind of works.... 2 seconds of warning is better than nothing.
It is because the government replaced all those good old ka band radar with new cameras that use very low k band frequency and extreme low microwave leakage. The V1 simply can't see them at all.
The only radar detector that still gives 5 seconds warning here is the "Stinger system". It cost 10x more than a V1, and is difficult to install.
Btw police are testing new magnetic speed cameras, which will be completely undetectable.

I was impressed by this work over at the E46 M3 forum:

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=355359

Personally I use the ol' slow over the crest of a hill or corner, accelerate if no cops in line of sight, repeat, procedure, and it has worked for me pretty well. Works great in a car like the M3 with gearing that scrubs off 10-15mph very quickly when letting off on an incline in 6th gear. It's actually a lot of fun on roads I know very well.

Then again I "drive to drive," I imagine someone who was a bit more distracted or less focused could really use the alerting of a detector.

^those principles in that thread are great ideas but unfortunately it's unique to the E46 M3 and possible with any car with enough money and creativity. Most owners do not want to go to this type of extreme.....

This + jammer.

The detector doesn't work if they are just cruising around anyway, so you always have to keep an eye out. Really the only time it works for me is when I'm on the freeway. I try not to drive fast in the city because they can just use their eyes and see that I'm speeding.

one thing to note as i continue to attempt to become a black hole, the guys at LI told me that if you are going to pair the passport 9500ci with the LI Dual (or similar), you should be turning shifting off of your passport laser shifters, since it may cause errors if two laser shifters attempt to defeat the same signal. i for one am a tad confused as to why that would be the case but there it is.

My LI heads are mounted similarly, only at the top of the headlight housing so you can only see them if you put your head down at headlight level

Jammer saved me today driving to work at 5 am sunday. Sneaky guy was sitting on the side of the road in the dark with his lights off. He waited until I was side by side to check my speed. It set off my front ka band and then immediately the rear. I took it off cruise control set at 80 just before he attempted to check my speed. I didn't hit the brakes because I didn't want my brake lights to go off. If I was a better driver I would have down shifted to slow down. For whatever reason he didn't follow me. I have a K40.

Your "jammer" didn't save you. If the only alert you received was Ka then your *detector* warned you. However, you also hit on the reason why those who think detectors won't help you in instant-on encounters are wrong. If your detector went off when you were abeam the LEO, then he was likely targeting someone else and your detector sensed the signal. There's no way he could get your speed abeam you - there's no range change to derive speed off of. You need closing or opening range to accurately measure velocity.

So you have to be far away to get your speed checked. He must of been somewhere else.

Not far away, just on an axis to measure closure. Also, quick flips from front to rear directions can also be due to reflections off of cars in front or behind you.
