Im new to M3, I've been noticing that the engine gets warm, past the operating temperature, is this normal, does it feel warm underneath the steering wheel where the gas pedal is or this is just me?

And have hit temps around 270-280 on super hot days at the track with 0 problems. Added the M24 oil cooler for piece of mind after 2 full track seasons, but this engine does run hot vs. others, but deals with and dissipates heat very well/quickly. Don't sweat it, pun intended, and enjoy the ride!

Sustained (10-15 min) spirited driving on backroads 50-60 degree weather above 5,000 RPM to Redline (including inclines/hills and descents, mostly in 2nd and some 3rd gear): Highest Oil temp = 225 degrees, water = 180 deg. Highway cruise top gear at 75 - 80 mph: Oil = 210, Water = 175. At idle at traffic light, Oil = 210-215, Water = 190+ degrees. All info from performance steering wheel.

A little addition, it's now below 60 here for winter so I hardly see my temp rise to 210. It's always short at like 195/200.

I notice the transmission tunnel gets pretty warm against my leg. Not sure if that is normal but doesn't seem to cause a problem. My operating temp is usually 210 or a little below.

The cats/exhaust run right under there.
210 is normal. I did a track day a couple weeks ago (30F ambient temps) and my car probably hit 230 lol! I thought I was driving pretty hard but the car obviously wasn't even breaking a sweat!

In 100 degree temps, on hard city/freeway driving I typically don't let the revs fall below 6k and keep it pinned to redline as much as possible on the freeway for pure fun! Runs at 255 all day long in summer and never had a problem. It sometimes goes to 265 but again no problems and continued to pull just as strong.
210 is cool. Also open the hood when you turn the car off and come back 30 mins later and you will realize how fast this engine cools off. If you start your car again its almost dead cold. This is much faster cooling than any other engine so you know its very efficient at dissipating heat |

I've had my oil temps to 300F on 100+ degree days on the track. It should never stop pulling unless it's truly overheating. I'm not sure where you come up with many of the conclusions you come to on various posts. Opening the hood and coming back to a cold car 30 minutes later doesn't mean that the engine is better than any other at dissipating heat. I'd be more concerned with oil and coolant temperatures with the car running because that's what matters, and that's a true measure of efficiency. Go drive an M3 and beat it to redline a few times and you'll see it go past 210 very quickly. 210 is not cool, it normal operating temp. Now do the same thing with an X5M (even ones that I've tuned), and you'll struggle to get it past 210 in the first place. Coolant should be 80-100C in normal conditions, up to 110 in extreme conditions such as a hot day, with a pulley, on the track.

I am not racing nor going above 80 mph ever on the freeway with speed limits of 65 and where every other car is doing same. The difference is I keep it in 3rd a lot on the freeway so I can be going at 65 in 3rd and gun it to 80 and listen to the engine roar. When cruising I switch to 7th but I will do a few bouts of dropping to 3rd and whaling on it. Whats the fun of the car without hearing the engine scream. My car is smooth, runs perfectly and these cars are made to handle hard driving or else they would not give it a 8400 rpm redline

---- But 90 in second? I think you mistyped that.. No way you're getting to 90 without a 10,000+ RPM Limit! (I think my car is around 75ish MPH @ redline IIRC). 3rd gear you hit 90mph @ around 7K w/ 6MT Because of gearing differences the 6MT will go roughly 5MPH faster than DCT in second @ redline, but DCT will get there faster (and shift faster).

I never paid much attention but today I was driving on the streets of OC pretty aggressively for 20 minutes, running 5k to redline most of the time and I noticed my engine oil temp was hitting 225-230.
Is that normal? Seems a bit on the hot side. I was concerned.
