Sound during turning

About 2 months ago, currently at about 5000 miles, my car began making a rubbing type of noise on slow right turns. At first I thought it was the limited slip differential after I searched threads on this, but it's definitely coming from the front of the car. It's somewhat inconsistent so I had to take the head tech out several times before it reproduced the sound. He had no idea where the sound could be originating. They want me to leave it with them a few days for testing which involves attaching some recording device to the undercarriage in order to pinpoint the area. The sound seems to decrease after the car is warmed up and as I said doesn't always occur. Any ideas on what this might be? Thanks.

Thanks. Yes I read this. However, it's coming from the front of the car and only on right turns. Technician said it's not the diff. He has heard that problem with some cars, esp. the e46 M3, but stated it doesn't sound like this.

Sorry, I just deleted my response because I read your post more carefully and saw you were aware of, and had ruled out, the LSD. My apologies . . .

For those who had/have the LSD sound.....is it obvious that it's coming from the rear?

Do you have the wheel cranked all the way or nearly all the way when you hear it?

Not really until I knew it was most likely from that. I thought it was from the front wheel well for a while, but at that point (February 2008) that hadn't been discussed so much on here and BMW hadn't posted the Service Bulletin.

Then it all made sense, because it was not at a particular turning angle, but a range of them, so it wouldn't be an issue of rubbing.

I get that sound too sometimes in that situation. But I just read the diff thread so I'm behind you. My car sounds like one of the front wheels is rubbing. Some of the posts in the diff thread say that is what that problem sounds like. I'm going to pay more attention and see if it's definitely from the front or back.

Thanks,

I have the same sound - I thought it was my brakes, but not too sure. There doesn't seem to be any functional problem, but any odd sounds (metal on metal ) are disconcerting...

Would like to know if anyone figures it out.

Yes only during right turns and it's not effected by braking. If I can hear it loud and clear with the windows up, so I'm sure it's quite audible outside the car.
