If your heart is set on an m3..get the M. The difference isn't THAT big so if you can get a 335 then just go for the M3 otherwise you'll always regret it when you see one driving. I learned the hard way by getting a 335 first.

If you can afford it, by all means, go after your dream.

I've learned over the years its always cheaper to get what you really want the first time around. The last thing you want to do is spend money on a 335 now only to change your mind 1 or 2 years down the road and have to spend money on the M3. Buy once, cry once I always say...

But again, if you can afford it.

Had an "is", fun car but no where near the M3. Think hard on this...do not want buyers remorse.

+1 I made the same mistake too. Even with performance mods, the M is just on another level.

Obviously M3 > 335is no questions asked.

Which should you go for?
I don't know.

I sorta have the same question for myself.

Here is the way how I see it...
M3 = V8 = huge plus (probably never will be another M3 w/V8 in the future), so if you want a V8, this is your last chance basically. check out my thread...
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=593156

If you don't race seriously or go to the track etc., but want power,
then I say save your money and use it for something else right now that is more valuable (you are a college student... UCLA? judging by your username. I'm sure you need all the money you can save.) and settle for a 335is.

That's how I am starting to think now. I might just buy a 335is around June (see my thread and you will understand) and do some mods to make it a little faster and unique (mostly cosmetic). I was thinking and decided my money would be better spent in other investments at the time being for me. I honesty am lost myself. Maybe I should just buy my 328 when the lease is up.

Also, I personally would rather have a new car VS old car, but it depends on you. There is about a 100hp diff between M3 and 335is, but from what I hear you can easily make the 335 faster by chipping it and doing mods (which I think totals out to be less than the M3). From financial standpoint, I think 335is wins.

Ultimately, it is really up to your personal preference; sacrifice more in spending in other things (clothes, housing, food, etc.) or in your car. And as mentioned above, you have to factor in insurance and gas. I honestly think a 335is is fine for you, although I'm sure you (AND SO DO I!!!) really want the M3 title. It just doesn't work out financially atm.

So choose wisely and good luck!

Let us know your decision! I'm curious to hear.

EDIT:
I was thinking about it some more actually and to me if you want to get the 335is, you might as well go for the M3 if you are going to spend all that money. The difference is huge apparently. Personally, I will be in a similar situation as you soon and I don't think it is even worth spending all that money (esp if you don't really have it or have to make great strides to save up for it). Settle for a 328i coupé with M Sport and other nice options (like me) and use it to fuel you to work hard in life and be able to afford an M3 hopefully soon!
Wow...! I actually sold...!
Thank you so much that your thoughtful reply.
I will really consider your opinion to my near future purchase.
I actually put on hold b/c crazy currency exchange lately...

btw, so, do you ride 335is...?
how's that? and is that has good mpg?

no problem. just trying to help out.

I have a 328i coupé white on red (see my signature for the options I have, basically every option lol --> fully loaded)
I ordered it and waited 2 months for it. got it February 2011 and love it!

I probably could have gone for a 335is with no options or packages or a 335i with no options or packages, but the options and packages are very important to me. You need to prioritize what you want.

Of course everyone wants the faster, better car (the M3), but given a budget, you have to ask yourself what you want. I don't race or hit the tracks, but I want my car to be somewhat fast compared to most other street cars. And I do love the color combo and options installed in my car. So for now, the 328i satisfies my needs overwhelmingly. It is truly a joy to have my car the way I built it.

I don't think I would live without the options in my car. I would never give them up for a 335i or 335is. M3? Maybe. But then again, I would have to think about it. Some people here would call me crazy, but luxury plays a huge factor in choosing a car for me because I can only afford one car right now. In the future I would ideally have a car for daily driving (M3), weekend car (Ferrari 458 Italia), and track car (Porsche?). But that's just my dream...

So ask yourself...

Does performance really matter?
If no, get a 328i.
If yes,
Do you want a fully loaded car?
If no, get a 335i or 335is depending on best deal you get.
If yes, get a 328i.

***DISCLAIMER: THIS GUIDE IS BASED OFF OF YOUR BUDGET!!!

At the end of the day, you will be happy with any BMW so just enjoy!

I had a 328i touring as a rental in Germany for about two months. The car was fantastic. Handled great, was fun to drive, plenty of power, ect ect ect. Then my Mazda arrived and life went back to suck. Then, I test drove the M3 and was blown away, ordered and now I drive one. My point is that get what you can budget in your lifestyle. If your car is going to put a strain on you, dont get it. A BMW is a BMW and if you dont know the difference, youll be fine and happy and get better gas mileage than the rest of us... There will always be better/faster/bigger/louder cars out there...

335is is a real snoozer. It's so pedestrian. Pass. Go for the M3.

I went through this decision process 4 months ago. I test drove both & the M3 won hands down. Then, after looking for 2 months for an 09 M3 without success, I priced an M3 & a 335IS conv. for a lease - they were $10 difference. A big no brainer! Plus, you talked about the improved gas mileage with an 335IS - Highway is 20 vs. 24. No a big difference. Good luck. No regrets ever with an M3.

This post is unfair, there is obviously a real world issue with the financial decision making involved. I've counted at least 9 or 10 posters, who had a 335i, got the M3, then ended up down grading to either a 335i or a different car for reasons like A: buying a house, B: can't afford it C: 'wanted something different - worth much less'

Save your self the trouble, give your self a few more months, save hard and fast and get the car you WANT, patience will pad your wallet. This quick trigger, I need it now type of buys usually burn you twice as hard as if you would wait.

At this point, given your post I think neither the 11'335is nor the 09M3 are good moves...but you are close...think with your wallet, not your heart.

My 5 cents.

Can't really afford it. You won't find an '09 with DCT CPO'd for $50k. Buy a used 335 and use the money saved to finance more English classes at UCLA. The M3 is not a great commuter because of the mileage and insurance costs. Just not a good car if you're on a budget, seriously.
