It's not a matter of age or what kids are driving though. R8, Ferrari, Lambo, etc look like proper exotic supercars. Even an alien from a far galaxy arriving on earth for the first time will recognize these cars are VERY expensive and exclusive and that their owners must be rich and loaded. That is where the prestige comes from.

The M3 on the other hand doesn't look like that. 99% of the people out there are not car nuts, and they wouldn't tell the difference between an M3 and a base model 328i that costs half as much. Besides, the M3 isn't all that expensive or exclusive. It's mass produced, and you don't need to be a CEO or an oil sheikh to afford one. Any fairly successful upper middle class person can afford to lease one. There are plenty of reasons to buy an M3. Making a good impression on other people is not one of them.

+1. M3 isnt that exotic IMHO. Its a 3 series based with better performance.
