LAPD show of force / surge (?)

has anyone else noticed the massive number of cops on the freeways / roads lately? after going almost an entire year w/o seeing them or seeing them only very rarely, i'm seeing them 2-3 times a day now (starting ~7 days ago). they have also been extremely aggressive - i've been pulled over twice and followed once for several miles all within the past 4 days. the pull-overs were total B.S. - stuff like "it looked to me like you were speeding." i wasn't, and both times they declined to issue tickets.

not sure what is going on out there. maybe they're experiencing a serious budgetary crisis or something, but they seem to be hunting down people in nice cars. anyone else notice the huge increase in number of patrol cars on the freeways, etc.?

I read a bulletin at the station in our morning brief that we are supposed to be targeting m3's and pulling them over right now. Last month it was miatas and in October ford focuses.

1st pull over was on the 405; was driving north from manhattan beach. don't remember exactly where i was. 2nd pull over on the 10W headed to santa monica from DT. was tailed on the 10W, much further east this time (returning from a meeting in the inland empire).

whatever is going on, it isn't normal.

Thought nothing of this until I saw 3 motorcycle cops on Pico this morning in century city in 1/2 mile. 2 were writing tickets; 1 was hiding in the gas station.

Must be BS tickets b/c it's bumper to bumper...

This sort of crackdown is so unacceptable. CHP and cops should be writing tickets for drivers tailgating, turning w/o signals, passing on the right, and other basic driving etiquette deficiencies that will you get you a ticket in say Europe and Japan. Not to mention, most of these are actual offenses, just rarely cited for.

Plus, ticketing for these offenses in higher volume should net them more $ if they need to combat budget deficits. When the US initiated a nationwide 55mph maximum speed rule to combat the oil embargo in the 70's and later repealed it (due to much controversy and opposition), the only major findings was the # of traffic tickets declined.

If I was a cop, I could ticket so many people, and speeding is only a minor fraction of the infractions I witness every time I'm on the road here.
