Scratched tint!?

I've noticed this on my car also. I see alot of posts saying people have ordered the tint protector, but has anyone actually put it on and verified that it stops the scratching??

One guy did and I will do it too if I cannot find felt covered OEM seals that fit my car.

This may make it a bit clearer. On each window there is this seal. A syou can see the top of it is felt covered the bottom is not. The bottom strip is what is giving the E90 owners all the problems.

It does not appear so. I have had both sedans and coupes and the coupes have a tendency to get streaks, but you can wipe them off with glass cleaner. The coupes seals are different with felt on all surfaces that contavt the glass.

The sedans on the other hand do not have felt on all pieces, hence the scratching.
The best solution is to find that BMW makes a trim piece that fits the E90 that has felt on all surfaces. That requires a bit of part research that I have not been able to do yet. If that doesn't work out, I have ordered the tint protector moleskin and will be applying that to the harder rubber that does not have felt on it.

They are different. Please see the pics. The above pics are from a coupe and the below one if from a sedan. You can see the seals are different. The coupes are entirely covered in felt and the sedans are only half covered.

Edit: Anyone use the kit on a 1 series yet? Is the door panel removal the same as the 3 series coupe? I think it should be.

Some coupes have hard plastic weather strips as well. Maye just the M3 has the felt....

Got my car tinted a couple weeks ago at a local shop and diligently waited for ~5 days before putting the windows down. After that time, I finally rolled them down and noticed a few scratches on the film on each front window (scratches deep enough to feel with your fingernail.) Talked to the tint shop and they said I must have dirt in the window "mechanism" that is causing the scratches that isn't there problem ("must have been there before"...) They said they didn't remove the door panel to do the install so it wasn't their fault, but they offered to redo it for free. I called the dealer to see if I could get it cleaned out so it wouldn't happen again, but I couldn't get a straight answer out of the SA for what might be causing it and he kept saying the tint shop is at fault and should fix it (he said they would charge me 2 hours of labor to check both front windows.)

Can somebody explain what might be causing the scratches - are there "rollers" or something that help raise and lower the windows or some other guide that could be dirty? I checked the edge where the window retracts (the soft, felt-like material that is supposed to keep dirt out) and I didn't feel anything in there that would be causing the issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same problem. The e9x models have a secondary piece of hard rubber/"squeegie" below the felt. Any debris that gets trapped below the felt will catch on this and cause the scratches.

You can either have this second piece removed (cut) or felted. I chose to have it removed as the installer indicated the added felt piece may come loose during the hot summer and create more problems. It solved the problem and is a simple process for the installer. Apparently it happens frequently some BMW models being tinted.

From personal experience I can say the tint shop is most likely telling the truth. On my G I had the same issue. Got tint, waited 5 days, put windows down, and bam, big scratch all down the window. Had the same argument with the tint shop that you did. I took apart my door assembly myself and found a pebble stuck underneath the rubber that insulates the window. Took it out, had the tint shop redo it, and have had no problems since.

You can try...but if you bend the rubber far enough that it leaves a crease, it won't block out water too well when it rains. I would suggest just taking the door panel off. I've never done it on a BMW, but it was really easy on my Infiniti. Literally 3 screws.

Most tint shops give a good warranty for any problems with tint, that usually lasts anywhere from 2-5 years...even lifetime warranties. Atleast from my experience. Good luck

I just had the Moleskin put in yesterday and the windows that were scratched redone. Time will tell if it works or not. I didn't do the installation, but it is easy, you can just pull back the top of the door panel and pull out the weather strip.

I had mine installed by the dealer monday, and re-tinted all four windows tuesday. Still can't roll the windows down to let the tint cure.

Come saturday, I will try all windows several times. I think I should be able to see initial scratches pretty quick.
