Cold start grind. Vanos, timing chain? (vid)

Here's the issue. Happens only on cold starts.

This has been discussed previously (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=412843&page=4). Any definite conclusion on the noise and the fix? Others experiencing this issue?

My car is a 3/08 build with 23k miles. The longer it sits without a start, the more obvious the noise. The vid above was taken after about 24 hours without a start. If it sits for a few days, the "grind" is notably more pronounced -- maybe twice as long in duration and sometimes with a pitch change.

Only experienced this for the last couple of weeks. Had an oil change yesterday and documented the issue with my SA who had no ideas. Factory warranty expires in about 10 days (of course), so looking to address asap. I'd like to steer them in the right direction...

Thanks.

Are you talking about the sound at the 5.5 second mark?

It's just a little vanos rattle when the top of the engine doesn't have a lot of oil cause it's been sitting. I get it every now and then when I haven't driven for a while.

Yeah, I've been having that sound on and off for years now I think. Happens when I don't drive the car for a couple days, and is more noticeable when it's been even longer.

It's normal. It's the activation sound of the secondary air pump (SAC). It's strictly an emission system and is designed to activate based on engine temperature. The longer it sits, the longer this pump will operate during warm-up.

I think I got that once, sounds pretty bad in person. The car had been sitting for about a week so that might be it. Only happened once though

This is WRONG. The sound that the OP is worried about is an issue with the VANOS, not the air pump or normal VANOS sounds. I had this exact sound (I posted in the thread the OP linked) and BMW replaced one of my VANOS units and the sound is absolutely gone.

Thanks for sharing fellas. Good to know, I think, that it's not necessarily a unique issue. Definitely time dependent -- when I'm daily driving I don't hear it. After the car sits for a time then it reappears, which does perhaps lend some credibility to the idea that it's an oil/lubrication issue. As in components get a bit dried out.

I'm becoming a bit more convinced on the normalcy of the issue, but it really does not sound like air pump activation of any kind.

Thanks for the thoughts. I saw your posts in the related thread and wondered if the VANOS replacement permanently resolved the issue. So should I expect the issue to get progressively worse over time? Something that could lead to other problems?

I don't hear a grinding noise. I hear the SAC which activates shortly after the engine has already started. It sounds totally different to what you had in your video and a noise that sounds similar to what my car does after sitting in the garage for a week or so.

Nope. Just had someone start the car up that's been sitting 2 weeks. I stood near the engine on my knees with ear close to the wheel well. Heard nothing no clunk like that sound in the video.

It did have a hard time to start but or a split second and it turned over. It always does this after sitting more than a week

Thanks for the info. Searched, but really only found the thread in my OP. One member has reported here that VANOS replacement completely resolved the issue.

Ok so after driving the car around over the weekend, after the engine was warmed up. I started it and stopped many times, running errands and stuff.

Well I heard this little clunk I are referring to but it was very faint and now I recall hearing it before. Pretty much all the time. I think it's normal cause the car drives and starts fine. No codes either.

I think your garage made it sound louder in the video because of echo?

Either way I won't fret and I'll enjoy the car and keep pushing it. If something is to give out or break, it will and time will tell. Hopefully before warranty is up.

Funny thing is I didn't hear it when the car was cold for 2 weeks on initial start up

I think all of this can be fixed by doing a big ol' burnout.

Thanks. Yes, the garage probably magnifies it a bit, but it is noticeable. It's much louder than the engine idle.

Is there anything in life that can't be solved by burnouts from your perspective?
