Has anyone encountered scams or troubles selling merchandizes on Craiglist?

I am currently selling my Omega Planet Ocean on Craiglist, and surprisingly, I am getting a lot of "urgency" offers. But one thing really concerns me, all these buyers are seems somehow very "busy" at work, and they would rather pay me a higher bid to ship it to someone rather than local pick-up.

Is there anything that I need to be cautious?

Please advise!

I never sold anything on craigslist before but someone tried to scam me when I tried to buy Lakers tickets off there. I say sell it local or on ebay if you are uncomfortable with these higher bid offers.

It doubts me because I posted it on a local platform. I have also indicated that I wanted a local pick-up, but most of the buyers are requesting me to mail it to third party.

Does anyone know what's really going on with these buyers? I personally don't think it is trustworthy.

Most likely fake checks or stolen credit cards.. which you will be questioned about. Better off selling it locally and getting cash for your item.

+1 sell local, in person, public location, cash. Make friends with the buyer. Make sure it's a good deal for both of you. Allow plenty of time for him/her to inspect - bring a magnifying glass for him/her.

I bought a concert ticket off Craigslist in April. $600 music festival ticket. Went to his house to pick it up, and paid cash. Perfect outcome.

i only do cash deals on craigslist. a serious and legit buyer will be more than happy to meet up.

Craigslist is full of scammers, even eBay sometimes as well.

You can never be too careful these days.....

haha, is there anything wrong with Nigeria?

There was this one "buyer"/scammer, who wanted this watch so bad for his son in Nigeria!

He was willing to pay $1000 premium just to get my personal info! What a scam!

I have bought and sold items on Craigs list.
Every single time I have listed some thing to sell I get emails from Nigeria, Montreal and Amsterdam. I never shipped any thing to them. I simply ignore them.
I always did cash deal and met the person. I am sure there are lot of scammers out there at the same time there are lot of legit buyers also.

If you are dumb enough to get scammed by these scammers, well you deserve it. Educate yourself, you can spot them right away.

With the first gen Iphone I bought 2 tried selling through there, got 4 fake checks. Clearly I sent them to my dads bank first to have his assistant check them out and sure enough they were fake. Never shipped the items emailed the people told them I was reporting them to the FBI and to fuck off.

These are definitely scams.. Same thing happened to me and my TV.

They will tell you that they are acting on behalf of a client, and the client owes them money, and they are willing to pay a high price for the item. They will want to pay via Western Union or cashiers check.


1. Distant buyer offers a high-value (but fake) cashier's check in exchange for your item

you receive an odd email offering to buy your item site unseen.
cashier's check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or just about anything else.
value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item - buyer asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR
scam often involves a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate owing buyer money, etc)

2. Distant seller requests payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:

seller often claims that an MTCN or confirmation code is needed before he can withdraw your money - this is FALSE, once you've wired money, it is GONE.
common items currently: laptops, plasma TVs, cell phones, tickets - but could be almost anything
common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, Ukraine, Spain, UK, Italy, Netherlands - but could be anywhere
deal often seems too good to be true

3. Distant seller offers to send you a cashier's check and then have you wire money:

this is ALWAYS a scam, in our experience - the cashier's check is FAKE
sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not
scammer often asks for your name, address, etc for printing on the fake check
deal often seems too good to be true

4. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service.

most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT, operated by scammers
for more info, do a google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud"
if you must do business with a distant seller, insist on a legitimate service, such as www.escrow.com

5. Distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which he will ship goods

he says he trusts you with the partial payment
he may say he has already shipped the goods
deal often sounds too good to be true

Do accept any request FROM BRITISH RENTERS claiming they work for the British Tobacco company and need housing in the US and your SSN and credit card. Yes, Craigs list is FULL of scams. If it's too good to be true, be suspicious.
