lack of cigarette lighter adaptor (12v outlet)
so now that I have had my car a bit and become familiar with it... its extremely annoying that when I open the center storage space where you would normally find a cigarette lighter, there is nothing. just a small somewhat worthless little storage compartment not large enough to fit much in.
In order to have my radar detector plugged in I have to leave my center console open with the cord stretched from the window to my center console. highly annoying. I realize there is a factory smokers addition which would put the lighter in the spot I have just a storage compartment but I wasnt able to locate a bmw that had that option while i was looking. anyone have any suggestion as to how I can remedy my situation?\ It would be nice to be able to close my center console. It would be nice not to have my cord going from the window to the center console. it would be nice to have more than 1 12v outlet. anyone with any words of advise on this?

i've never seen a US M3 without the smokers package
is your car used? i'd guess the prior owner was a non smoker and had issues with an ashtray and changed it to that |

I think your previous owner swapped it out. All the E9X M3s I've seen have a cigarrette lighter plug there. The good news is, under that storage bin is a 12v plug which you can wire up to your detector. Go to radio shack, buy a cigarette lighter receptical and wire it up.
Better yet, do a search here on the forum and find a DIY for hardwiring your detector so you don't have cords everywhere. You don't have to leave the armrest open, I have my car charger in there and I can snake it out the drivers side of the armrest and will still latch.

it was used, yes. 2009 cpo e90 m3 with 3,000 miles on it. so if the guy traded it out he didnt really benefit from it and made my life annoying!
@skierman64 - it is the cord that spirals instead of laying flat so when I loop it through the side it damages the rubber seal on the center console lid which is the only reason I havent been doing that. when you were referring to 'under the storage bin' were you referring to the storage bin on the dashboard where the lighter should already be? or were you referring to the center console bin?

i have looked about everywhere I can get to easily without taking parts out thinking there must be another 12v outlet somewhere... so far still only finding the center console one.

There is a location underneath the dash beneath the left side of the glove box that can either have a 12v outlet in it, or have nothing but can be retrofitted with a few OEM parts to provide a 12V outlet. Whether you add the smokers package back into the center console for 12V or add 12V underneath the glove box, you'll need to remove the center console to accommodate the change.
I removed the smoker's package and 12V outlet from my center console and added the OEM cubby area while keeping the existing cover. At the same time I extended the 12V outlet wiring over to a 12V outlet I added in the area described above. It works like a charm. Some cars came with this under-dash 12V outlet and some didn't, I don't know why. A dealer parts department can determine what parts you need to add the 12V adapter. As I recall, it was just the 12V socket and an electrical connection that I wired into the existing wiring. Good luck.

It's called something like smart wire. Get it at Best Buy. I didn't do the installation, but the guy who did my window tinting did the install in about 15 minutes.
