Do you have a maximum?
When driving on a freeway with good/excellent conditions, is there a maximum speed that you won't exceed? I am curious, but not interested in condoning or condemning how other's drive. It's not that I'm politically correct, I just don't want to start another sanctimonious yelling match.

I've noticed that no matter what car I am in I always end up cruising at 80 without even looking at the speedo. Dont know why. It may have started as many cars have 80 at the 12 o clock position but my wife's VW Tiguan doesnt and I still do it at that. Weird.
"Freeway" (motorway to us) limit here is 70. Not that many people stick to it. Ill pop up to 90 and 100 but generally settle back to 80. Rarely exceed 100 on the motorway. Cruise control is pointless here unless its late evening, too much traffic.

Since I am in Germany, if I am on an unrestricted section of autobahn under excellent conditions (lighting, weather, and traffic) then I will push it as far it will go. A lot of bad stuff can still happen even under those conditions. So far I have only done this once, but have regularly cruised 100 MPH to put me with "the flow" of traffic.
It is really going to be hard moving back to the states.

Well, I'm in Germany. I usually drive my RSX at around 90-100mph steady pace. I've pushed my buddy's 335i to the limit (I don't have my M3 yet), but not for long. Like osteome said; many things can still go wrong at that speed.
In the US? No more than 80mph. |

Up to 10-15mph above any speed limit in the city, up to 20mph above the highway speed limit. Short bursts of 30mph above highway speed limit while passing.
Strict speed limit at school zones, parking lots and communities, I don't f**k around in those. |

I have the max speed alarm thingy set at 90, so i try to stay under that. Usually I cruise on the highway at 70-80 depending on the flow of traffic.

I usually keep it 6-8 over the limit. Insurance surcharges are too expensive with two kids in college.
Been over 140 on the race track. No sense driving too fast on the highway. It's dangerous because you can't predict how the average driver will react and it gives BMW drivers a bad name.

I started this thread for several reasons. I'm in my early 50's and have had a fair number of high performance cars. The last 7 years I've driven staid, conservative Mercedes and Lexus sedans and honestly thought the "need for speed" was out of my system. When driving my sedans I would rarely exceed 75 mph. Late last year I decided to purchase a new car and was contemplating a 911 Turbo, at the time my wife was adamant that I not get another Porsche because she remembered that I drove sports cars too fast for her comfort level. I was annoyed, but didn't push it (after 25 years I visit my balls) and picked up the M3. I hate to admit it, but my wife was absolutely correct in her assessment. My driving habits have morphed back to the former me. I drive friendly, but by any standard very quickly. After reading responses to my question I am going to reset my speed warning to a lesser speed. Thanks for the input.

Here in Seattle the limit is 60. And we have one cop per driver here so we need to be really careful I usually follow the flow of trafic, which is between 60-70mph. The most I did on deserted areas is 120mph. I don't know why, I have a mental block, everytime I hit 120, i back of...

We have a speed warning on the car? I try and stay at 80 on hwy but sometimes find maybe in the 100 range. I also try and lower my speed back down to nothing over 80.

My system is probably too complex and full of mental masturbation.
If I'm just cruising on freeway with not urgent need (and I mean URGENT, not just sorta) I normally cruise no more than 8-9 over the limit. Same for secondary roads. If I'm in more of a hurry (freeway) or more playful (secondary) I still maintain a max under the threshold for crossing from speeding to reckless driving. It's different in the three or four states I mainly drive in, and is typically a combination of amount over and/or set speed. I will however use up every bit of that limit, under the idea that if I'm gonna run the risk of getting a ticket it may as well be worth it. The number of times I've been over that limit on the road in the past 10 years for more than 10 seconds at a time between curves is very, very limited. I look at speeding tickets as a tax, and the points as the real penalty. If I'm going to pay the tax, I want the goods. If I'm going to get the points, it better be for good reason as it WILL affect my driving the next couple years as my job requires me to have a license and I simply can not afford to lose it. Ironically, I haven't had a ticket in about 8 years with a combination of this approach, common sense and a V1.
