Exhaust video rant

Why is it that everytime a vendor or anyone posts a video of an exhaust, 90% its just video of someone revving the car in neutral. Who really cares what it sounds like revving in neutral? Does anyone actually do that on a regular basis? Revving under load will sound different from revving the engine in neutral. The exhaust compilation video sticky on this forum is probably one of the better exhaust videos made because it covers nearly all the conditions that would be encountered on a regular basis. What I mostly care about when shopping an exhaust is:

Sound at idle
Sound inside and outside the vehicle at constant cruising speed
Sound inside and outside the vehicle at low acceleration from stand still to 3000 RPM.
Sound inside and outside the vehicle at WOT.

Sorry, just had to rant on that a little.

i completely agree with you on that..and seeing vids of revving in N just made it tougher for me to make a decision...or when the cameras are mounted to the bumper while the car is moving...that will make the exhaust sound much louder than driving under normal conditions because the sound will be drowned out by other cars, wind/road/tire noise....So, i posted this: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=509019

hope that helps

Sorry if I take this somewhat personally since I posted a revving video. I do somewhat agree with you however you also don't have to watch someone's revving video right? LOL. The video I posted while revving in neutral was just to document the first time I started it up after my install. So are you saying I shouldn't have wasted everone's time and shouldn't have posted? No need to respond.

If you are looking for a video for a specific exhaust setup and in a specific scenario, simply posting and asking for one (kind of like the 2nd half of your post above except you didn't say what exhaust setup you are looking for) might produce results. Maybe a forum member or vendor might already have a video to share with you.

The post wasn't directed towards any one person. In fact, this trend is not only limited to this forum. You see it everywhere. Just go on youtube and 90% of the exhaust videos are just people sitting in their garages revving the engine. I just think its pointless. If your video includes the startup and idling for a minute or so that's more helpful than the revving because that's a condition you would experience almost everyday. Also, because the sound of an exhaust changes after the initial break in, I probably wouldn't bother to post a video until after 1k miles of use. That would give the best representation of what you're really buying if you're using these videos to choose an exhaust. Sure it won't be all nice and shiney in the video after 1k miles but that wouldn't be something that would keep me from buying a particular exhaust unless I saw rust starting.

I prefer aggressive acceleration rather than WOT, but both would be better. Most of the videos are in neutral and WOT; useless to make a decision for me .

I did these 4 videos for mine (except no WOT, only up to 5500, and only from inside car. )

It's easy for you to sit behind your computer and rant while others actually try to contribute to the community.

There's already a bunch of videos out there including the few posted above in your thread. Too bad none of them are to your standards.

Agreed... I wasn't the hardest thing I've ever done, but I did go out of my way to try to create something that would be of use to people trying to decide on their exhaust.

Exhaust vids are tough to judge from anyway due to limited capabilities of microphones and computer speakers. When I installed mine, I was blown away by how deep sounding it was. Unless you have 5.1 surround sound on your computer, I would say the sound in the video is only mildly directional to what it sounds like in real life.

Also agreed. I thought I wanted something much louder due to the videos, but after hearing in real life, it completely changed my mind.

+2 don't get an exhaust based on recordings from poor quality mics playing through poor quality videos listening through poor quality speakers. I think revving videos are cool. It's a v8 it's just something you do.

Ha, I f-ing knew it. There are plenty of videos, reviews, etc. on this site alone to help you make a decision. I even went out on a limb a little bit and purchased one of the lesser known systems and am very happy. Get off the fence and buy something....this car deserves it.

If I'm going to spend $3k+ on an exhaust, I'm going to be damn sure I know what I'm buying. Unfortunately, my location doesn't help that issue as there are no BMW tuners here and the modded community is very limited.

Yeah, it's a tough decision. If you are going to be finicky about the exact exhaust note that you're looking for there is absolutely no way you're going to be able to tell from videos no matter how well put together or how high quality. There are other systems out there that cost half $3k or less. You could try one of those without too much risk. Also, if you're going axle-back bolt on you can save some dough by putting it on yourself.
