Strange dark film inside oil fill hole

I recently changed the oil, I put in LiquiMoly GT1 10w-60. Then today, I went to top off the oil, opened the oil fill cap and saw this. It seems like there is a dark film coating everything. Pics attached.

I'm at just over 80k and my car is an 09 e90. The car in the oil changing tutorial I followed didn't seem to have this, at least as far as I could tell from the photos.


Any ideas what this is?

If you reach in there with a Q-Tip or something similar, can you wipe it off? What's the consistency, smell, etc. like? If you pull the filter, does it have the same liquid all over it too? What's the car's service history like?

The dark film could just be varnish, which is normal.

I scraped it HARD with a q tip and some of it came off as you can see, but it didn't come off very easily. It is kind of gunky or carbonlike in consistency. Nothing to note in terms of smell, but I have a horrible sense of smell coupled with a lack of mechanical experience so I can't identify anything in particular.

Car has been maintained regularly, but has not had a rod bearing service or anything else significant to note in its history. Never tracked, although driven hard and over long distances.

That sounds like varnish. Are you saying this was never there before, or are you admitting you might just be noticing it for the first time now?

MDM9, how often do you change oil mate, could it be "gunk" from a bit too long in between?

Those photos are from cars that have known sludge problems (VW 1.8, for example) or cars that went 30k without an oil change. I doubt OP has that problem even if he went the full 24 mo/15k for his changes.

Judging from some bottom end pictures from engines with claimed 15k intervall, looking pretty damn dirty and even gunky, wouldn't be surprised if that stuff eventually find its way around. Curious to hear what intervall OPs car have been running on. Or what the alternativ reason possibly could be.
