try a local hobby shop first.

that way you wont have to deal with international shipping and other added costs.

ebay and amazon had them last time i checked.

my local hobby shop is stocked with them, surprisingly!

so if anyone wants me to pick one up locally, i can ship it to you. just throwing it out there.

To cut the bodies I use a dremmel plastic cutter attachment but don't go all the way to the edge and leave a small amount of material.
Then I switch to the sanding piece and use a very low setting to smooth it out and get as close as possible so the body won't look like a two year old did it.

As for painting the bodies I have no friggen patience to tape the insides up and than spray them, so headlights and small areas like that always have overspray because I don't care to tape well

Thank you for buying products made in Japan.

The cutter should not be used at wheel arch.
Try to bend along the line, it will crack in beautiful edge.

Pretty much unavoidable considering most cool things are either made in China or Japan.

OP, nice progress

Instead of tape for the paint there is a spay-on mask you can use. You spray it on and after it sets up you trim it with a hobby knife and then peel off the areas you want to paint. Good stuff and easier than tape.

as you can see from the pictures it has been quite a challenge for me to cut the lexan body out.

this is especially difficult for the wheel wells.

scissors cannot cut it, literally lol

so i have purchased this circle cutter from olfa with the hopes that it will do a better job.

I use a handheld dremel rotary tool with a grinding bit. It does it's job well when finishing/touching up lexan bodies especially in the wheel wells. What brand spray paint are you going to use? I would do a light spray of pearl white before you do the alpine white scheme. Makes it pop out more.

Hey there. Not sure that circle cutter will work. All you need are a pair of hobby scissors. Not sure exactly what they are called, but they are specifically designed an curved to cut lexan rc body's.

Good luck.

how long did it take to put it together (the chassis/engine etc)

I have never done anything like this but I REALLY want to pick up one of these and start a little project on it.

You should have masked and painted the body before trimming. That way the paint won't spill out onto the exterior- painting the inside of course.

The best way to trim a lexan body wheel arches is like already suggested here, with a dremel tool and and grinder (the one that is shaped like a cone). Trim with scisors close to the edge and then trim the rest of the way with the dremel. Go slow and you will find the dremel will grind and slightly melt the lexan. Remove the flashing and use 600 grit paper wrapped around a suitably round dowel or toilet roll to finish the edge.

Like I said however, it's best to wait and trim after you paint (if not too late already).

Oh, and if you do paint it white- back it with a final coat of silver over the white to give the white a proper finish when viewed from the top through the clear lexan.

Good luck, it looks like fun!

putting chassis together with the motor takes about an hour or so depending on how you like to sand and cut the excess plastic

its not that difficult, but i have done one before so it was very familiar.

the real time and attention is required for the body (cutting, sanding, masking, spray painting, applying decals, etc...)

that could take anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on experience and detail.

thanks for the tips. its halfway too late i guess lol. but ill try and tape the outside of the wheel wells so that the paint does not drip onto the outside.

Thank you for all the info on the build. My husband and I are going to spend some quality time building one since I miss my M so much as it is stored for the winter. This will buy me some time with a smaller version. I haven't ever done this before but he's built helicopters so hopefully we can do this.

Glad I can help. I am sure if he can build helicopters, this will come naturally too.

Knowing how long it will take me to build this thing spring may be here first. It might be fun to launch it over the snow drifts, since its not my real M I will get winter driving out of my system this way!
