Brake Ducts
Does anyone have specific knowledge about whether they exist on the e90M3.........I had to open up the fender lining, install ducts and open up the grille on my e39M5 for track use...........thanks, Joe

Thanks........no one seems to be mentioning cooling as an issue......I guess that track pads and fluid is all that is needed to prevent fade. Of course the M5 is much heavier and really worked the fronts......Joe

I don't think the stock E9X M3 brake system has been pushed that hard on the track by most enhusiats who post on these forums, so I'd say it's too early to say if there is a fade issue or not (with proper pads), and if brake cooling can help. We'll probably know a lot more by the end of the summer. Call up Turner or Bimmerworld and ask. I know Turner has a project car--I have seen it at the track and it had stock brakes at the time--and James Clay has been posting about his PF upgrade on the brake section of the forum.

Turner car was at Buttonwillow running the stock brake system last spring. Before I even knew who he was, asked him about the brakes. He said fade wasn't much of an issue. This was on a 100+ day.
Most others seems to be focusing on pads and fluid first.

i just got home from tracking my E90 M3 at Homestead Speedway, and let me tell you, these brakes need some proper cooling!!! the fade was sooo bad after about every 5 laps i would have to do a slow cool down lap to let the brakes cool! even after the last session of the day after my cool down lap, when i parked in the pit, my brakes were smoking!

Yep. If you did experience fade, track pads would make a significant difference to the extent that your problem would most likey be resolved. That won't bring the temps down, but it will take care of the fade issue as track pads are rated to operate at much higher temps.

Yes, the BBK issue has been discussed in some detail. You should be really be fine with track pads in terms of fade; the stock rotors are fairly large and should be fine for people doing HPDEs in relatively stock cars. However, some claim BBK will result in better pedal feel at the track. I haven't heard anyone who knows what he's doing confirm that yet after a BBK upgrade. Changing the fluid would be a good idea. Mine boiled and spray out a little through the relief valve in the cap.

I'm not Lucid, but a popular one is Motul RBF 600. It has a higher boiling point, looks close to stock and runs approximately $15 a bottle.

I heard good things about Motil 600, but have not used it. I currently have ATE type 200 in the car. I had super blue in there earlier. I change it twice a year.

With the DSC or MDM activated by the car sliding (understeer or Oversteer)the individual wheel brakes can be applied to control the slide. When the electronic nannies are turned off the brakes are only used for slowing the car,not trying to control the yaw angle which means that the brakes have more cooling time between applications and that means they will run cooler.
