Windshield gets chipped easily?!

aerodynamics? safety? I don't know, but this shouldn't happen really - not in this car. I think the material is very brittle and it chipps off easily. Anyway, I guess we have to live with it and try to keep a big clearance. I guess there aren't any clear bra type of products specifically for the windshield, right?

What is the price for new windshield?

I noticed a few chips as well, thought it was just bad luck but seems it is a fairly prevalent issue.

Mine is an 08 and yes it seem to chip pretty darn easy. I was going pretty slow (snowing) and a pebble bounced off it and I got this annoying chip

ouch. I have known that BMW cut corners on the glass product. I experienced that on my E36 M3, Little grains appeared on the windshield within 6 months post purchase.

I've had the car for 2 weeks, and I have 3 chips on it that I need to get repaired or they will start to spread.

I've driven a VW Jetta (10 yrs) and a Honda Odyssey (6 months) on the same roads/speeds and not had any problem.

There are some serious issues with the auto glass.

I am having my windshield and driver's window replaced after a sand storm that I encountered on PCH. State Farm picks it up with a $250 deductible, no questions asked with OEM glass. Glad to see that I am not the only one with this issue. GL

I already have a 1/8" wide chip in my windshield and it was there when I bought it brand new. Must have been hit during transit. It is on the extreme
edge of the glass next to the weather strip on the passengers side so not very visible. This is not good news to hear at all. I have a Mustang with 200K miles and the windshield is still in good shape considering the mileage. Surely the M3 has equivalent glass quality.

How can you get them repaired? In other words is there anything that can be done on mini chips to disappear (or become less obvious)?

I looked in to the repair process and it is more like buffing for tiny, i mean tiny chips and from what I read it is NOT effective. It will remove windshield wiper streaks... big deal, i get those out with Clay and windex. The kit offers a type of harsh compound polish and you use a Porter Cable (although one guy said he needed a strong rotary to get anywhere) to basically sand the glass down to a deeper level than the scratch or chip.

I get sprayed by a truck; like a shotgun blast of sand/grit/salt and I'll be damned, got home and checked, sure as shit, 3 little tiny sparkles that will never go away until I change the glass. These windshields may be expensive, but they chip really really really easy. BTW - check your insurance policy (US Memebers). Mine covers glass 100%. Most have a small deductible. I can't see why they cover glass 100%... what if i'm anal? Which I am and who decides how big or small a chip defines glass replacement? This is wacko, but a few more shotgun blasts from trucks and I'll be cashing in. Also, the glass is like $450 if you don't have any coverge. Not so bad...

Driving on a back road all alone. Suddenly a pick-up truck traveling the other way goes by me.....bang....big chip in the windshield right above the rain sensor. The car had 237 miles. The chip in the windshield was "white" on the black background of the sensor so I just took out a permanent black marker and "painted" it. It's barely visible now.

The car is not only a chick magnet but also a chip magnet.

I had a pebble hit my windshield when I had 90 miles on it!! Chip and small crack. Had it replaced and got a small chip right at drivers side, center, eye level almost immediately on the new windshield. My wife has a 530i and is in need of it's 3rd windshield. These things are BRITTLE!!

Chipped my old E90 335xi in two places on two consecutive days last winter, one of them became a crack and the other started spiderwebbing when I traded the car. These windshields are very fragile and delicate.

There is a way to easily see all the micro chips which I discovered accidentally yday: Go outside the windshield at night and beam some light on it (eg with a flashlight). You will be able to see even dust particles! In order to distinguish these from the chips with certainty clean the windshield first (with the wipers + water, or with a coton cloth).

You will be amased how many micro chips are there which you haven't noticed. This is not for the faint hearted...

I know I saw a topic on this long ago but could not relocate it.

Seem pretty clear to me the windshield on the E92 M3 is way too soft and prone to pitting. I replaced my windshield in my E36 M3 once and not until like 150,000+ miles. Sure it was overdue. My current windshield looks about the same. Many small stone impact leave a noticeable pit whereas before they would leave nothing visible. This weekend I went for a nice drive in mountains and deserts of So Cal and got in a nice hike as well. We had a high wind advisory and out in Anza Borrego I went through a few moderate sand storms. They only covered 50 or so feet along the road in my path but they had a lot of sand and small debris really kicked up. The noise on the car was frightening, especially on the windshield. Just afterwards the windshield was noticeably damaged and severely pitted. It has a uniform array of small pits, most noticeable in the sun. Of course I was a bit panicked about the paint and plastic but all there seemed to be fine. The recent JetSeal, 50-50 and my clear bra definitely helped.

I would like to hear from others with any similar experience.

Anyway, to make a long story short I am going to the dealer to request a new one, on them of course. I'll follow up to share their decision.

I'd be very interested to see how you do at the dealership. I am still waiting for my e92 M3 (it just arrived at the dealership today!), but my e46 was VERY prone to pitting, as well - I had to replace the windshield twice, in 32,000 miles, and I am Captain Cautious with regards to allowing adequate space when following other traffic, etc., in order to avoid damage.

I think the windscreen glass is too brittle (not soft), but otherwise I feel exactly the same on the issue of easy pitting / chipping (thus the thread I initiated as per above). My windscreen is accumulating chips quite fast, which is annoying. Worst part is that there is no solution other than replacement (but even then you cant go on replacing windscreens forever)!!
