Welcome!
Owned my used 09 E92 since Feb. Only systemic issues I've come across have been the idle control valve, diff noises and front H7 bulb failure. The ICV was apparently an early problem; my car for example had one replaced under warranty. There is a BMW service bulletin to use special diff oil on customer compliant. Mine sounded like a groan or graunch in the parking lot, usually turning left. So far as I know it is only a noise issue. The Angel Eye bulbs fitted in my car's MY were a common bulb failure. My SA replaced both bulbs with the upgraded part last time I was in. That is about the extent of common problems I seem to have seen. The car, in either MT or DCT, seems very strong and reliable. Time will tell of course, as we will start seeing 08's and 09's start to come out of warranty. One hopes the new second owners will keep the service schedule up after the maintenance plan from BMW ends. Good luck with your purchase.

I just did what you are thinking about. Owned a 2008 STI, I had all the bells and whistles. Went stage 2, pro tuned, air intake, expensive exhaust, full suspension upgrades, everything. Still with all of that, the new M3 that I picked up two weeks ago blows it out of the water and I haven't even broken it in yet. In every category, comfort, technology, build, handling, the M3 is killer. My STI was tiring to drive. It was so loud I could barely have a conversation in it. The stereo was cheap. The bluetooth phone was a joke. Not to mention that I was always worried that the engine would blow or the piston ringlands would fail or some other catastrophic malfunction would happen. I realized I ran out of things to do to the STI that would make me happy. So, I gave up, and gave in to the M3. Success! Now, once I have broken it in I will tell you my second impression of the car.

I have rattles in the drivers seatbelt mechanism, the center console and the passenger outside mirror. Tried 7 times to fix the mirror which none has made it go away, the center console issue, they blame the aftermarket exhaust for the extra vibration and the seatbelt rattle is new since I had it in last
