When it comes to staying on your driving record, it varies by state...for example in VA, I think it stays on your driving record for 12 years.

However it stays on your criminal record forever (unless your state has some sort of expungement options).

I believe it's possible to petition the courts to remove it given certain conditions have been met (and you have a lawyer, ie this will not be cheap). But yea, a quick google search leads me to believe it doesn't expunge on its own.

In CA it's 10 years on driver record. And you can get it expunged from your criminal record if you finish probation without problems. However, expunged just means private company won't find out, but gov will always find out, so if you try to apply for gov license like insurance, real estate, paramedic driving license, broker things like that you have to declare it, which means your company find out as well.

Everything I can find indicates that DUIs in Georgia stay on your record forever.

DUI is usually a misdemeanor, I don't believe there's any states that "default" DUI to anything else. That said, it is possible to be charged with felony DUI based on things like BAC or multiple offenses

Ok, a little clarity. DUI is a criminal complaint but is written under the vehicle code, so it is a mover, unless you get a felony DUI. There is a difference, and if you got one, you'd know it. Additionally, most states have two different categories regarding criminal records. It will ALWAYS be on your permanent record both criminal and driving unless as mentioned above, you get it expunged. It's terribly expensive, and you must be able to show good cause for the expungement. You can't just get it taken off because you don't like it. Also, if you were fingerprinted, those records and the reason you were printed will always be there. However, for insurance purposes, stuff drops off the "record" after a certain number of years, depending on the state. In Illinois, its three years, unless you know the governor or mayor Daley.

Or you get lucky with some ineptitude elsewhere in the system like I have

(not about DUI or anything just other traffic violations)

+1 to what everyone has said...

In California i believe DUI is 10years.
If you were pulled over, and had the BAC of over .08 (.01 for minors), that is a Misdemeanor DUI

If you crashed into someone or something and had the BAC of over .08 (.01 for minors) this is a Felony DUI.

Long story short, DUI's are nasty and stay with you for a long time. Just look what back in the day when George Bush was getting bashed on for his DUI.
